Taormina

With an enviable location on Sicily’s east coast, Taormina has the reputation of being the chicest spot on the island. Atmospheric winding streets filled with exclusive boutiques, cafés and restaurants lead off from its main Corso Umberto I and its fabulous main piazza looks out over two sweeping bays below. In the background, Mount Etna frames an already dramatic view.

The town's most visited tourist spot is the extraordinary Greek amphitheatre, host to an extensive festival programme during the summer months.

Hotel Villa Angela: A 20-minute stroll from the centre of Taormina but with the multiple advantages of exceptional views from your bedroom terrace, great hospitality, free parking and free transfers to the lidos below Taormina.

Next, the baroque towns of South East Sicily

No visit to Sicily is complete without a glimpse of the towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa in the island’s south east corner. All rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, they showcase some of the best examples of Italian baroque architecture.

Stay in rural Sicily at the Torre Marabino, a 7-room boutique hotel tucked away on an organic farm near Ispica. Breakfast on fresh ricotta and homemade cakes, jams and pastries amidst gardens dotted with olive trees in the Sicilian countryside, then laze by the large pool in the heat of the sun.

The Torre Marabino is close to the wonderful sandy beaches of Porto Palo, Pozzallo and the slightly wilder fringes of the Vendicari Nature Reserve.
