Top marks for the Palazzo del Sale’s location, perfectly-placed for exploring Ortigia in the heart of ancient Syracuse. Just under an hour from Catania airport, the city is an excellent short break destination.
Simple and stylish, the palazzo still has the high ceilings and partially exposed stone walls that remain from its former use as a building for salt storage.
Owners Giovanni is happy to advise on itineraries and organise excursions, event tickets and restaurant reservations. Free internet is available via a laptop in the lounge.
Bedrooms are bright and spacious, with high wooden beamed ceilings, small standing balconies and bright splashes of colour. Rooms on the top floor are made for romance with terraces that overlook the rooftops of Ortigia. The loft room, which has a double and two single beds, is ideal for families.
Breakfast in the Palazzo’s lounge and choose from any number of local restaurants and pizzerias, within walking distance, for dinner.
Restaurant with a view? Try the Terrazza sul Mare on the rooftop of the Grand Hotel Ortigia, innovative Sicilian dining overlooking the town's roofs and gulf.

Just steps from the Arethusa fountain and the sea promenade, the Palazzo del Sale is a great starting point for a walk around the charming centre of Ortigia.
Encompassing over 2000 years of culture and history, the city is UNESCO listed for its Greek ruins and Baroque architecture.
There is an excellent choice of beaches in the area, ranging from those at the popular resort of Fontane Bianche to the wilder fringes of the Vendicari Nature Reserve. The turquoise waters of the Plemmirio Marine Reserve are just to the south of Syracuse.
Explore beyond the city on an excursion to the vineyards around Avola and the towns of the Val di Noto.
