Overview

Simple but extremely stylish, this former 14th century monastery has been converted to offer a little touch of heaven between the sea and lemon groves of southern Italy.

Architect owner Lea bought the property in 2000 and spent seven years refurbishing a building that had essentially remained untouched for 100 years. She now runs the hotel with husband Massimo, providing flawless service and an enviable attention to detail.

Set in the heart of medieval Pisciotta, the lofty building looks out towards the coastline, over gardens that cascade down the hillside, punctuated with mini-terraces furnished with wrought-iron, white-cushioned furniture. On every level, terracotta pots and pebble-filled beds are planted with palms, cacti and bougainvillea.

The main entrance to the hotel is off a narrow alleyway into a cool courtyard with a reception area and mini-library.

Situated on multiple levels, stairs lead down to the bedrooms, past landings packed with exquisite antique furniture.

Pisciotta’s narrow alleys and stairways, are fringed with palazzi and houses that date back to the 16th century and in the evenings, locals gather at the few bars or outside the gelateria while children run up and down the stairs that border the main piazza. The historic centre of Pisciotta is off limits to cars and motorcycles, but it is possible to park in a communal car park in the centre or in a private space reserved by the hotel.

Beaches in the area are sandy, with the option of sunbeds and umbrellas, with clear blue seas. It is also possible to rent boats or arrange diving and snorkelling trips in the marina. Boat trips depart from Palinuro and Scario to some of the tinier bays and caves.

Rooms

Bedrooms are individually styled, some with terracotta flooring, exposed stone walls and powder blue shaded cupboards and doors.

Choose from three types of bedroom – Classic, Superior with sea view and Junior Suites – all with small balconies (standing) or big picture windows and contemporary bathrooms.

Dining

Hotel Marulivo has no restaurant but snacks can be ordered throughout the day, Massimo, behind the bar, prepares great apertifs as well as after-dinner cocktails.

Breakfast – fruit, delicious yoghurt topped with creamy walnuts and a basket packed with croissants and flaky pastry treats – is served on the panoramic terrace with spectacular sea views.

The lively Osteria del Borgo, just around the corner, is an excellent option, with an open air veranda and plenty of local seafood and pasta.

The restaurant Angiolina, down by the marina, is, reputably, the best table in southern Italy

Map

Situated on the outskirts of the medieval historic centre of Pisciotta, surrounded by breath-taking views over the blue sea, coastal hills, and olive and lemon groves, the hotel provides an extraordinary glimpse of authentic Italian village life. Owner Lea is passionate about the area and will help you plan meticulously everything from visits to the best beaches to boat trips and excursions inland. For an insight into the Cilento’s ancient past, visit the sites at Velia and Paestum. The Oasi Morigerati, a WWF site, is an excellent introduction to the Cilento’s natural landscape – here you can follow paths through the forest to a huge cave and the spot where the Bussento river gushes out from underground. A little further inland, the magnificent UNESCO-listed Certosa di Padula, Europe’s largest Carthusian monastery, and the nearby town of Teggiano are well worth a visit.

This is the third occasion that Antonio has organised an Italian holiday for me. As it was a Birthday celebration involving a party of 10, the arrangements were complex, involving a villa, guides and attendance at the Palio on July 2nd. Without exception everything went exactly as planned. The recommended villa on the Montestigliano Estate, south west of Siena, was wonderful. Our guide made sure we had a full understanding of the history and culture of the Palio which meant that, with a spectacular view over the Campo from the apartment booked by Antonio, we were able to appreciate the event that much more. We shall certainly be going back to Italy with Expertoitaly.read more

Antonio with his meticulous planning and caring service has been solely responsible for the best Italian holidays we have had. His ability to offer excellent hotel accommodation which provides for every need and requirement is second to none . Hotels that are not main stream , that provide high quality of service in excellent locations are one of Antonio’s strength. It’s great to have a provider that know and understands his market. July 2018 _________________________________ Have just completed another 10 day holiday arranged by Antonio at Expert to Italy. We went with Antonio's suggestion and spent 2 days at Matera and then the remainder in Pisciotta in the Cilento. Matera was amazing and felt completely different to anywhere else we have been in Italy. We loved Pisciotta and the hotel was wonderful with lovely owners who were great at suggesting things to do. We visited a buffalo farm, a vinyard and tooks boats to isolated coves with lovely clear water. All arrangements were absolutely faultless. We would never have found such lovely places without Antonio! 2016 _________________________________ We have just returned from a fantastic holiday suggested no arranged by ExpertTo Italy. Once again the organisation by Antonio was flawless and everything worked perfectly. We spent 5 nights by lake Maggiore and 3 in Cogne in the Italian Alps. Both hotels and locations were fantastic - particularly the Bellvue in Cogne. Please see trip advisor if interested in the hotels as I will give a more specific review there - I'm not a fanatic reviewer but both really deserve it. We have used this company for the past 5 years and Antonio seems to have a real gift for finding fantastic hotels and matching locations to his clients. I would not usually put the level of trust in anyone to arrange holidays for me that I have with Antonio but he has delivered every time and I can unreservedly recommend his services. Italy is a beautiful country with huge variety - if you describe what you like to Antonio and let him make suggestions then you will not be disappointed. Very definitely 5 stars from me. So - Antonio and team, please keep it up! Jonread more

Antonio delivered more than expected! Our family of four stayed at two beautiful villa's on the Amalfi Coast. Both of the locations were top class. Antonio provided excellent service and was always available if we had questions about the details of our trip. He was easy to work with and we would recommend his services to others traveling to Italy.read more
