The Prologue: Blessings and Beginnings

Saturday, May 4, 4:00 PM - Cathedral of Ferrara

The chronicle of the Palio begins with a sacred ritual, the Benediction of the Palii. Within the hallowed walls of the Cathedral of Ferrara, a congregation gathers, their hearts reverberating with the echoes of a ceremony that dates back centuries. The Palii, or banners, are not mere cloth but emblems of honour and divine favour for the competitors. Accompanying this solemn occasion is the Offering of the Candles, an act symbolising the light of tradition that guides the city.

The Anticipation: A Prelude of Skill

Saturday, May 11, 3:00 PM and 8:30 PM / Sunday, May 12, 4:00 PM - Municipal Square

As the Palio approaches, Ferrara’s heart beats faster with the Ancient Estense Flag Games. The Municipal Square transforms into an arena where the air is filled with the sound of fluttering flags and the gasps of mesmerised onlookers. The flag bearers, with their elaborate throws and catches, narrate a story of pride and skill passed down through generations.

The Pageant: A Renaissance Spectacle

Saturday, May 18, 8:45 PM

The zenith of the festivities is the Magnificent Procession. As the sun dips below the horizon, a stream of over a thousand figures adorned in Renaissance finery flows through the city. This splendid procession mirrors the grandeur of the Este court, breathing life into the streets with a splendour that rivals the luxury of the Renaissance itself.

Tension mounts as the Mandatory Trials of the Horses at the Ropes commence. Here, the steeds and their riders are put through their paces, a display of equestrian skill that sets the stage for the main event. Not to be outdone, the Mandatory Trial of the Donkeys challenges the notion of stubbornness with displays of surprising agility and speed.

The Feast: A Culinary Overture

Date to be Announced

The Propitiatory Dinners serve as a delicious interlude to the competitive fervour. Within the evocative setting of the Ducal Palace and amidst the various districts, banquets unfold. These dinners are more than a feast for the senses; they are a communal rite that cements bonds and unites competitors and spectators in anticipation.

The Climax: A Chorus of Hooves

Saturday, May 25, 8:00 PM - Piazza Ariostea

The grand finale, the Palio Races, unfolds under the banner of the evening sky. In Piazza Ariostea, history is not just retold but recreated. The races are divided into four chapters, each an ode to a different facet of the city’s spirit:

For boys, the red Palio of San Romano is a testament to youthful vigour.

For girls, the green Palio of San Paolo celebrates grace and ambition.

For donkeys, the white Palio of San Maurelio is a narrative of the unexpected.

For horses, the yellow Palio of San Giorgio is the ultimate contest of speed and skill.

These races are not just for glory but a homage to a pivotal moment in Ferrara’s past – the coronation of Borso d’Este.
