Travel from Naples to the coast of Basilicata and on into Calabria, combining city walks, time beside the sea and journeys by rail. Three nights in Naples introduce the art, food and street life of the south, followed by five nights at Santavenere in Maratea, two in Reggio Calabria and four in Tropea.

The contrast gives the fortnight its appeal: Naples and Reggio Calabria for culture, Maratea for unhurried hotel days and boat outings, and Tropea for beaches and evenings in the old town. We arrange the hotels, rail tickets, private transfers and guided walks as one land-only holiday.

Naples: art, neighbourhoods and food — 3 nights

  • Private transfer from Naples airport
  • 3 nights with breakfast in a Deluxe Double room at Atelier Inès Arts & Suites
  • Three-hour private walking tour

Atelier Inès Arts & Suites gives the Naples stay an individual setting in Rione Sanità, where artists’ workshops, churches and everyday neighbourhood life sit close together. Begin with your included three-hour private walk, then leave time to return to the streets and places that interest you most.

Explore Spaccanapoli, the Duomo and the craft workshops of Via San Gregorio Armeno. Add Capodimonte for art, the Bourbon Tunnel for a different view of the city, or a walk along the waterfront opposite Castel dell’Ovo. Between visits, make time for pizza, coffee and the neighbourhood’s pastry shops.

Our Naples guide will help you choose how to spend your free time before the train journey south.

Walk through Spaccanapoli and visit the Duomo.

Enjoy the waterfront and the views across the Bay of Naples.

Make time for the art collections at Capodimonte.

Try the pizzerias and pastry shops of Rione Sanità.

Maratea: gardens, coves and time by the sea — 5 nights

  • Rail travel from Naples
  • Private transfer from Maratea station
  • 5 nights with breakfast in a Premium Sea View room at Hotel Santavenere

The train takes you south from Naples to Maratea, with a private transfer from the station to Hotel Santavenere. Five nights gives you time to enjoy the hotel’s gardens, pool and beach club, with a sea-view room to return to after a day out.

Maratea’s coastline is made for a boat outing: small coves, rocky headlands and clear water, with the mountains rising behind. Inland, the old town offers lanes, churches and places for a leisurely lunch. A visit to Monte San Biagio brings a wider view of the coast from beside the Christ the Redeemer statue.

Keep some days free for the hotel itself. Its private beach is pebbly, and the gardens and terraces offer plenty of places to sit between swims. Local outings can be arranged by boat or with a driver, so you can enjoy this part of the coast without a hire car.

Highlights

Explore Maratea’s old town, churches and lanes.

Enjoy the hotel gardens, pool and private beach club.

Take in the coastal views from Monte San Biagio.

Discover the coves and rocky coastline on a boat outing.

Reggio Calabria: the Riace Bronzes and the Strait — 2 nights

  • Rail travel from Maratea
  • 2 nights with breakfast in a double room at Al Castello B&B
  • Three-hour private walking tour

Continue by rail to Reggio Calabria for two nights at Al Castello B&B. The stay centres on the National Archaeological Museum and the Riace Bronzes, with time to appreciate the city around them.

Your included three-hour private walk introduces Reggio’s history and main sights. Afterwards, explore the streets around the Aragonese Castle, stop for a bergamot-flavoured treat and walk along the Lungomare Falcomatà, looking across the Strait of Messina towards Sicily.

Highlights

See the Riace Bronzes at the National Archaeological Museum.

Walk the Lungomare Falcomatà with views towards Sicily.

Discover the history of Reggio Calabria with your private guide.

Explore the streets around the Aragonese Castle.

Tropea: beaches and old-town evenings — 4 nights

  • Rail travel from Reggio Calabria
  • 4 nights with breakfast in a sea-view double room at Palazzo Mottola
  • Private transfer to Lamezia Terme airport

Travel back along the Calabrian coast to Tropea for the final four nights. Palazzo Mottola places you in the historic centre, overlooking the sea, with restaurants and small shops close at hand.

Spend the days between the sandy beaches below town and the lanes and squares above. The view towards Santa Maria dell’Isola is part of everyday life here: at breakfast, during an afternoon pause or over an aperitivo as the light changes. The descent to the beach involves steps or sloping streets, with the climb back to consider after a swim.

A boat outing along the coast adds another perspective, while four nights leaves room for days with very little planned. Your holiday finishes with a private transfer to Lamezia Terme airport.

Highlights

Spend time on the sandy beaches below the town.

Explore the old town’s lanes, shops and restaurants.

Enjoy the views towards Santa Maria dell’Isola.

Make time for an aperitivo overlooking the sea.
