Start with the right airport

Palermo, Catania and Trapani create very different routes. We look at arrivals and departures before fixing the order of the journey.

Decide where a car actually helps

Some Sicily holidays are better with car hire; others work beautifully with private transfers, trains and hydrofoils. We do not assume one model fits every traveller.

Give each place enough time

Allow time for the places around each stay and for enjoying the hotel itself. We can suggest where an extra night will give you more freedom to explore.

Make travel days part of the holiday

Pause at a winery, ancient site or small town as you travel, or enjoy the sea views from a ferry. We plan worthwhile stops and comfortable connections between stays.

Planning notes for Sicily

These are the practical points we consider when designing a Sicily holiday: airports, car hire, pacing, ferry timings and the season.

Which airport should I use for Sicily?

Sicily has three useful arrival points: Palermo, Catania and Trapani. The best choice depends on the route rather than simply the cheapest flight.

Palermo works well for the city itself, Cefalù, Western Sicily and some routes towards the Aeolian Islands. Catania is usually the most practical airport for Taormina, Etna, Siracusa and the Baroque south-east.

Trapani can be useful for the far west, including Erice, Marsala, the salt pans, the Egadi Islands and San Vito lo Capo, but it works best when the route is designed around that side of the island.

Do I need a car in Sicily?

Not always. Palermo, Siracusa, parts of the east coast and some island combinations can work well with private transfers, trains or hydrofoils.

A car becomes more useful for Western Sicily, countryside hotels, Etna, the south-east and longer self-drive routes. The decision should be based on the route, not habit.

How long should I stay in Sicily?

A week can work well if you focus on one area. Ten or eleven nights allows two contrasting bases. Two weeks or more gives space for several contrasting stays.

We usually prefer a Sicily holiday that feels well paced over one that tries to include every famous stop. The right length depends on airports, driving appetite, hotel style and how much time you want for slower days.

Can I include the Aeolian Islands?

Yes. Allow several nights to enjoy an island’s villages, swimming and hotel, as well as a boat day or guided outing.

Ferry timings, weather, luggage, mainland connections and the choice of island all need to be considered carefully.

When is the best time to visit Sicily?

Spring, early summer and autumn are often the most comfortable months for a richer Sicily holiday, especially if culture, walking, food and sightseeing matter.

July and August can still work, but the route needs to be planned with heat, crowds, beach time and slower pacing in mind.
