Tailor-made holidays in Northern Italy

Northern Italy: lakes & mountains

An art city, a lake, time in the mountains

Begin with Verona’s art and evening restaurants, spend a few days beside Lake Garda, then settle into a mountain village in the Dolomites. Or combine Turin’s museums and cafés with Lake Maggiore and the valleys around Cogne. We bring these different experiences together through carefully chosen accommodation, a comfortable pace and travel arranged around your holiday.

Your kind of holiday

Different landscapes, a pace that suits you

Northern Italy offers considerable variety within one holiday: an art collection in the morning, village restaurants beside a lake, vineyard visits and days among Alpine scenery. We choose the combination around what you enjoy doing and the hotel you will return to each evening.

Couples of all ages

Match the place to your pace

Tell us whether your ideal day involves a lakeside stroll and lunch, a few hours on a walking trail or a longer mountain outing. We consider the terrain, steps, hotel location and access to the places you want to explore, alongside food, views and time to relax.

Family holidays

Give everyone room to enjoy it

San Vigilio di Marebbe is a particular focus for families, with Excelsior as the starting point for a mountain stay. We match activities and room arrangements to the children’s ages and leave time for the hotel as well as days out.

Time well spent

Let each stay earn its place

For a week, one well-chosen base often works best. For 10–14 nights, two stays give you a change of scenery without too much packing; three can bring city, lake and mountains together when the route and your interests justify it.

Tailored multi-centre holidays

Combinations to make your own

These holiday ideas show the contrasts we can create. We adapt the order, hotels, room choices and number of nights to your dates, budget and preferred pace.

Culture within the journey

Choose an art city for more than your arrival

A city stay gives the holiday a different rhythm: museums and architecture, markets, cafés and evenings on foot. We choose the city for what you want to see and how it fits the next stay.

Western combinations

Milan & Turin

Milan brings art, design and useful onward rail connections. Turin offers museums, elegant streets and café culture, with Maggiore or Cogne as contrasting next stays.

Eastern combinations

Verona & Venice

Verona pairs naturally with Garda and Borghetto, while Venice can begin a journey into the Prosecco Hills or Dolomites. Give either enough time to enjoy it beyond the headline sights.

Art & architecture

Padova & Vicenza

Padova and Vicenza offer rewarding cultural stays of their own. Combine one with village time around Borghetto, or use the rail connections for a city excursion from a suitable base.

The accommodation matters

Choose the stay as carefully as the destination

The right hotel changes the holiday. In Varenna, a village location can put restaurants and lake outings within your daily plans. Above Merano, Castel Fragsburg invites a different rhythm, with more time at the hotel and arranged journeys into town. At Selva Capuzza, apartment space and a countryside setting suit a different Garda stay from a hotel in Malcesine.

We also look closely at the room: whether a lake view or terrace is worth choosing, whether an apartment gives your family useful space, and how steps, separate buildings or room layouts affect the stay. Your proposal identifies the room category and the practical arrangements that go with it.

Rail, car & arranged transfers

Travel that works for the hotels you choose

Northern Italy’s rail and road network makes varied combinations possible. We plan three parts of the journey together: travel between areas, the final arrival at your hotel and how you will explore during the stay.

Car-free

Town bases and planned arrivals

City stays, Varenna, Stresa and Domodossola can form rewarding rail-led holidays. We add the local travel or transfers needed to reach each hotel with luggage. For a mountain stay, the plan also considers village transport, hotel services and the experiences you want to enjoy.

Self-drive

Freedom for rural stays

A car is particularly useful for vineyard retreats, countryside apartments and hotels above the lakes. We select comfortable driving stages and explain parking and arrival arrangements for the chosen properties.

A mixture of both

Use each where it adds value

Enjoy an art city without a car, then collect one for the countryside or mountains. Or link cities by rail and use an arranged transfer for the final hotel. We choose the combination around the route rather than applying one travel style to the entire holiday.

The journey to and from Italy

Include Switzerland’s scenic railways

A journey through Switzerland can be part of arriving in Italy or travelling home. Varenna is a natural Italian stay to consider alongside a Bernina journey; Milan also allows us to incorporate Swiss rail into a holiday elsewhere in Italy.

Train on the Bernina route
Across the Alps

The Bernina route

Make the changing Alpine scenery part of the holiday, with a Swiss stay and time beside Lake Como. We choose the trains and overnight stages around the journey you want to make. Explore the Bernina journey →

A longer Swiss journey

The Glacier Express

Build a wider Swiss rail journey before or after your Italian stays, giving the mountain destinations time of their own. The Glacier and Bernina routes can also be combined as part of a longer holiday. Explore the Glacier Express →

Beyond the hotel

Give each stay its own pleasures

Mountain food & walking

Summer and autumn outdoors

Our Alta Badia field report introduces some of the food and experiences behind a mountain stay. We match walks and outings to the distances and terrain you enjoy, leaving room for village life and the hotel.

Plan with ExpertoItaly

Tell us how you would like to spend your days

Tell us when you would like to travel, who is coming, how long you have and your approximate budget. Let us know which places or hotels appeal, how much walking you enjoy and whether you would prefer to drive, travel by rail or combine the two.

We turn this into a tailored proposal: selected accommodation and room types, a balance of nights, travel between stays and experiences suited to your interests. For families, we consider the children’s ages and the space you need. For couples, we match the setting and pace to the holiday you want.

We arrange the accommodation, transport and selected experiences for your land-only holiday. Flights are booked separately.
