Lakeside hotels in Italy

A waterfront balcony, a garden retreat or a hillside villa: the setting changes how you experience an Italian lake. Choose your hotel around the town, the view and the way you want to explore.

Choose the stay, not just the scenery

What makes this setting right for you?

Waterfront or above the lake?

A hillside outlook can be wonderful, but the ferry pier and dinner in town may involve a drive. A waterfront hotel gives you a different daily freedom.

A terrace worth choosing

Balconies, terraces and views belong to particular rooms. We compare the actual outlook and outdoor space, alongside the bedroom and bathroom.

How you will get around

Trains, boats and transfers make some bases practical without a car. Elsewhere, a car adds worthwhile freedom. We assess the hotel, not just the lake.

Design and a quieter lake

An eleven-room Piero Lissoni hotel with a garden pool and lake and island views.

Boutique Hotel Villa Sostaga

Views, dining and quiet days

An elevated villa with gardens and a pool, best enjoyed with a lake-view terrace room or an individual spa suite.

Planning your stay
The waterfront is an outing by road. A car is essential for independent exploring; spa features belong to specific suites.

Enjoy a city first, then leave time for the hotel.

Make the hotel part of the journey

A stay on its own, or a wider holiday

A week in one well-chosen base can be rewarding in its own right. For ten to fourteen nights, we usually begin with two complementary stays and allow time for the move between them.

Milan, then a settled lake stay

Enjoy art and architecture before moving to the lake. We match the station, hotel and final transfer so the change of pace feels manageable.

Explore Milan and lake combinations

Mountains followed by Lake Orta

Contrast walking and mountain scenery with quieter nights at Casa Fantini, allowing for a proper transfer day between the stays.

Useful questions

Can we enjoy a lake hotel without hiring a car?

Often, with the right town and hotel. Station transfers, hills and seasonal boat services still need planning.

Does a lake view mean direct water access?

No. A hotel may overlook the lake from above, stand beside a lakeside road or sit on the shore. We explain the particular setting.

How long should we stay?

Four or five nights give a useful introduction. Five to seven leave more room for boats, gardens and the hotel itself, without changing towns every night.
