Most straightforward
Panarea
Choose Panarea for whitewashed San Pietro, pedestrian lanes, Punta Milazzese, Cala Junco and offshore islets. It is the easiest of the three to understand during a first visit.
Aeolian island excursions
Panarea, Filicudi and Alicudi are sometimes grouped together as the smaller Aeolian Islands. On the ground, they offer three very different days: one immediately visual and relatively straightforward, one more substantial and rugged, and one whose steep terrain and limited services demand careful planning.
The right choice depends on more than which boat happens to be available. It depends on where you are staying, which Salina port is practical, how much walking you want, whether the coast matters more than time ashore and how dependable the same-day return looks on your dates.
The aim is not to collect islands. It is to choose the excursion that adds the right contrast to a stay on Lipari or Salina.
The first decision
The three islands are not interchangeable. Panarea gives the clearest combination of village, coast and archaeology. Filicudi rewards a longer and less polished day. Alicudi is worthwhile only when its physical and logistical limits are part of the attraction.
Most straightforward
Choose Panarea for whitewashed San Pietro, pedestrian lanes, Punta Milazzese, Cala Junco and offshore islets. It is the easiest of the three to understand during a first visit.
Most substantial
Choose Filicudi for volcanic scale, Bronze Age archaeology, inhabited harbour settlements, walking and a rugged coast that becomes clearer when part of the day is spent at sea.
Most selective
Choose Alicudi for steep stone stairways, scattered houses, mule paths and an unusually direct relationship between settlement, slope and sea. It is not a routine sightseeing day.
Staying on Lipari
Lipari generally offers the broadest transport choice and the easiest access to services before and after an excursion. Panarea is normally the most natural first option. Filicudi requires a generous day, while Alicudi should be considered only after checking the complete outward-and-return pairing.
Read the Lipari island guideStaying on Salina
Santa Marina Salina and Rinella are separate ports with different route patterns. Santa Marina is normally the first port to investigate for Panarea; Rinella is the more natural starting point to check for Filicudi and Alicudi. The actual return service remains decisive.
Read the Salina island guideA direct outward crossing is not enough. A workable excursion needs useful time ashore, a realistic return and enough margin for the island you intend to explore.
Panarea
Panarea is the most immediately visual of the three islands. Its scale makes it possible to connect San Pietro, the southern walking route and the archaeological landscape without trying to cover the entire island.
The harbour settlement introduces Panarea through whitewashed houses, narrow lanes, the church and a polished waterfront. The atmosphere is sociable, but that is only one part of the island.
The route towards Drautto, Cala degli Zimmari and Punta Milazzese gradually replaces the village setting with open coast. This is the most coherent land-based sequence for a first excursion.
Basiluzzo, Dattilo, Lisca Bianca and the surrounding rocks belong primarily to a boat circuit. They should not be presented as ordinary archaeological or beach stops reached casually from San Pietro.
ExpertoItaly view
The island does not need to be sold through celebrities or nightlife. Its real strength is the relationship between village architecture, a manageable coastal walk, visible archaeology and the offshore landscape.
If a boat circuit is the priority, it may replace part of the land itinerary rather than being added to an already crowded day.
Filicudi
Filicudi feels more substantial than Panarea. Its inhabited southern coast, Bronze Age landscape and volcanic western shore can fill a complete day, but they should not be treated as one compact walking circuit.
Filicudi suits travellers who are comfortable giving an island the whole day and accepting that transport, paths and services will feel less polished.
Filicudi Porto and the Capo Graziano area provide the most logical introduction. Pecorini a Mare reveals another inhabited side of the island, while La Canna, sea caves and the western cliffs belong to a separate coastal perspective.
Land or sea?
A land-focused day can concentrate on the harbour settlements and Capo Graziano. A coastal boat excursion gives the stronger view of La Canna, the sea caves and the island’s western cliffs.
Whether both elements can be combined depends on the transport window and the format of the excursion—not simply the distance between places on a map.
Alicudi
Alicudi is not simply a quieter version of the other islands. Its houses climb steeply from the landing, movement is governed by stone stairways and mule paths, and the absence of a conventional road network changes what a visitor can accomplish.
A worthwhile Alicudi visit can be modest: arrive, understand the lower settlement, climb only as far as the conditions and return time allow, and observe how the island is organised vertically.
The experience depends on the gradients, the quiet between scattered houses and the constant view back towards the sea. It should not be padded with promises of numerous conventional attractions.
A selective excursion
Alicudi suits travellers who are physically comfortable on prolonged steps, need few services and are satisfied with observation and walking rather than a checklist of sights.
The ascent towards Filo dell’Arpa is a serious hike to the island’s upper slopes. It should not be treated as a normal activity during a short public-transport excursion.
Think carefully before choosing Alicudi
Strong heat, reduced mobility, unsuitable footwear, a short period ashore or an uncertain return are all good reasons to choose a different island. Alicudi loses nothing by being selective; the mistake is presenting it as suitable for everyone.
Three different experiences
The best island is the one that matches your interests, walking appetite, starting port and available transport window.
Panarea
Filicudi
Alicudi
For most first-time visitors: Panarea is the easiest decision. Filicudi is the stronger alternative for travellers who want a fuller landscape-led day. Alicudi should be chosen deliberately, never simply because it appears on a timetable.
Practical planning
Seasonal schedules, sea conditions and departure ports determine whether an excursion works. Exact services should be checked for the traveller’s dates rather than copied permanently into an article.
Public transport
Liberty Lines fast services and Siremar conventional ferries provide point-to-point transport. A public service gets you to the island; it does not provide a guided visit or a circuit of sea caves, coves and offshore rocks.
Organised excursion
An organised or private boat may provide a better view of the coastline and offshore landmarks. Routes, landing time and included islands vary considerably, so the name of the excursion is less important than its actual programme.
The Salina port question
Travellers staying on Salina must search each port separately and include the journey between their accommodation and the harbour.
Santa Marina is normally the first port to investigate for Panarea. Rinella is geographically better placed for western-island services towards Filicudi and Alicudi. This is a planning principle, not a permanent promise of a convenient daily connection.
Wind and sea conditions can alter or cancel services and boat excursions. Avoid building an onward mainland connection around a fragile same-day island return.
Wear shoes suitable for stone paths and uneven ground. Heat, exposed sections and limited shade can make short distances more demanding than expected.
Carry water and do not assume that refreshments, luggage services or shops will be available whenever a boat arrives, particularly on Alicudi.
Be back near the departure point well before the scheduled service. An attractive final stop is not worth risking the last practical return.
Check current services directly with Liberty Lines and the Siremar timetable search. Timetables should always be rechecked close to travel.
Building the Aeolian stay
Lipari and Salina remain the most useful accommodation bases for this part of the archipelago. The right one depends on the wider holiday, not simply on the number of excursions shown on a timetable.
Choose Lipari for
Lipari has the archipelago’s broadest range of shops, restaurants, museums and practical services. It works particularly well for travellers who want island life with more variety and the strongest overall choice of public connections.
Panarea is normally the most straightforward excursion. Filicudi can work as a substantial full day, while Alicudi should be tested carefully against the actual timetable.
Explore Lipari as a baseChoose Salina for
Salina suits travellers who want a greener island, strong food and wine, and time that is not organised around constant departures. Excursions can still be included, but they must be matched to the correct port.
Santa Marina is usually the first place to investigate for Panarea; Rinella is the natural port to check for Filicudi and Alicudi. Accommodation location therefore affects the practicality of the day.
Explore Salina as a baseAnd Vulcano?
Vulcano earns its place through the Great Crater, volcanic landscape and its proximity to Lipari. Panarea may be possible through the right connection or organised excursion, but Filicudi and Alicudi generally create a disproportionately long day from here.

Just back from another delightful holiday organised from start to finish by the Italian "Expert" Antonio. After several discussions with him we decided to have an eleven day trip to the Amalfi coast and Ischia and thanks to his intimate knowledge of the area we had a most enjoyable and memorable time. Ischia in particular was absolutely wonderful. Antonios advice on the boutique hotels, guided tours, and places to visit were exemplary as were the drivers he booked to ferry us around. In addition to all the knowledge and advice he provides, this time, we encountered a couple of problems of our own making, but a quick WhatsApp to Antonio and within 24 hours both problems were solved. So if you are looking for an independent holiday in Italy along with great support we have no hesitation in recommending Antonio Mike & DianePosted on Google![]()

We engaged Antonio Cresce to plan and manage our 3 week holiday in Italy - covering towns in the regions of Puglia, Basilicata ,Calabria and Campania. Our holiday was seamless and exceeded all our expectations, and I would highly recommend Antonio / Expert to Italy for all your holiday planning and needs. From the point of choosing destinations, Antonio was collaborative and listened to everything on our wishlist . The towns he chose for us were exactly the places that we loved .. off the beaten track, charming and authentic Italy ! He picked our accomodation and again there was a lot of collaboration over our needs and we loved the choices . The tours he organised were exceptional. I wanted to see wildflowers and orchids and he engaged experts to take me around the national parks . I would never have been able to source the contacts and organise the excursions as perfectly as it was done . Some of the best moments of our travels , ever! Transfers were professional and seamless. Antonio remained fully contactable throughout our trip for questions , help and any details we needed. We felt fully secure and confident that we had an agent travelling along with us at every step! It was a huge benefit as well having him in the rough time zones as Italy where he is based in the UK, so that any questions were promptly answered and sorted . This could have been more problematic if we had engaged someone from home in Australia with the big difference in time zones . We appreciated his travel advice and recommendations, his work ethics , his professionalism and how he went over and beyond to make our holiday truly exceptional!Posted on Google![]()

Antonio is super helpful and efficient and he knows Italy. He arranged our three centre Italian holiday, booked all train tickets, taxis and hotels and suggested places we wouldn't have thought of. You can have an independent holiday without problems, even in a less touristy area, because he's organised everyone for you and he's a back up if anything goes wrong. Thanks Antonio, be in touch next time!Posted on Google![]()

We used ExpertoItaly to help us with our two-week holiday in Sicily. We had a couple of interactions with Antonio, and were very fast to close on our itinerary and hotels. Everyting was very well organized and suitable to our requirements. Antonio chose very good accommodations: small beautiful, full of character and well located. He also booked our bus trips as we did not want to rent a car. That worked really well. It was a great help and gave us great confidence for our trip. We strongly recommend ExpertoItaly if you want customised holidays in Italy. We will use it again for future traveling in Italy!Posted on Google![]()

Antonio was really helpful in planning our trip to Italy. We wanted to visit 3 locations, he provided recommendations on accomodations which were great - really good locations for each booking. He also coordinated taxis and trains and provided a load of suggestions for each location for places to eat and sites to visit. He was readily available to answer any questions we had by email or WhatsApp. His assistance really helped us in planning this trip and saved us a lot of stress in trying to coordinate this ourselves. All in all we had a great holidayPosted on Google![]()

Antonio organised a wonderful two-centre trip for us. He listened to our requirements and designed an itinerary that fulfilled our needs perfectly. All the arrangements (hotels, transfers, bike hire, train tickets etc.) went smoothly and Antonio was available before and during the holiday to answer any queries. He is helpful and charming. The pricing was very competitive and the holiday good value for money. I would recommend ExpertoItaly to anyone looking for knowledgeable, excellent customer service and look forward to using Antonio’s services again in the future.
