Kayaking in Naples: Seeing Posillipo from the Water

A guided paddle along Marechiaro, Gaiola and Trentaremi reveals Naples through its coves, tufa cliffs and coastal villages.

Explore the Posillipo shoreline

Kayaking is worth considering because it briefly removes you from the traffic and intensity of the centre. From sea level, Posillipo becomes a sequence of small coves, tufa cliffs, villas, fishing places and protected water.

An active half-day on the water adds variety to a longer Naples stay. Combine it with separate days in the historic centre and time to enjoy the waterfront, food and museums.

What the outing covers

Marechiaro, Gaiola and Trentaremi

The pleasure lies less in ticking off named monuments than in seeing the coastal shape of Naples. Marechiaro retains the scale of a fishing village; Gaiola brings together small islands, Roman remains and a protected marine environment; Trentaremi opens into a broader bay below the western end of Posillipo.

The route begins and ends at Rocce Verdi, rather than in Mergellina or Nisida, and can vary with conditions. For the coast’s wider history, see our guide to Greek Naples and Posillipo.

Kayaking brings travellers close to the coves and sculpted tufa shoreline that cannot be appreciated in the same way from the road.

How it fits into a city break. Keep the historic centre for a separate day. The main Naples travel guide explains how to divide your time between the centre, waterfront, Posillipo and excursions beyond the city.

Effort and suitability

A guided outing for beginners who can swim

No previous experience is required for the guided group activity. An instructor accompanies participants in open sit-on-top kayaks, but everyone propels and steers their own craft, will get wet and must be able to swim.

Children are currently accepted from age four when they can swim and are accompanied by an adult. Non-swimmers, anyone uneasy on open water and travellers whose mobility may affect paddling should discuss suitability with the operator before booking.

Guided group tour

The sensible choice for beginners. The standard excursion is currently listed at 10.30, with arrival requested 30 minutes beforehand.

Seasonal departures

Sunset and full-moon outings appear on limited summer dates. Published calendars can become outdated, so confirm the current season directly.

Private excursion

Departure time, duration and optional additions can be adapted. These tours are quoted and booked directly with Kayak Napoli.

Independent hire

This is different from a guided tour and is intended for people with at least some kayaking experience.

Before you set out

Meeting point, equipment and what to bring

The meeting point is Baia delle Rocce Verdi, Via Posillipo 68. The operator warns visitors not to confuse it with Via Porta Posillipo: the entrance is on the side of the road opposite the sea, leading down towards the parking area.

Kayak Napoli currently identifies bus 140 and the Rione Primavera stop. A taxi may be simpler from central Naples; limited paid parking is also listed. Plan the return journey in advance.

Supplied for the standard tour

Instructor, kayak, paddle, buoyancy aid, waterproof bag, drinking water and mask.

Bring with you

Swimwear, T-shirt, water shoes, sun cream and a complete dry change. Waterproof clothing is advised in cooler months.

At the base

Personal belongings can be left with the operator. A changing room and WC are available.

Before departure

Participants must show identification and complete the operator’s liability waiver.

Weather, season and booking conditions

Sea kayaking depends on suitable conditions. Wind, swell and visibility can alter the route or prevent the outing altogether. Kayak Napoli’s published terms allow the operator to cancel for weather reasons up to one hour before departure, so avoid building an inflexible day around it.

The standard tour is presently advertised daily, while sunset and full-moon outings use limited calendars. Current customer-cancellation terms state 48 hours’ notice and a 95% refund, but the operator’s pages are not fully consistent about contact methods, rescheduling or operator cancellations. Read the terms before paying.

The published standard group price is €30 per adult and €15 for children aged 4–13. An online deposit is requested, with the balance paid on arrival. Prices, times and participation rules should always be reconfirmed directly.
