Best for
Couples with time to settle in
The strongest fit is a couple who values outdoor space, a good room and time together at the hotel. It works particularly well for an anniversary or honeymoon, with the room choice doing much of the work.
Mandello del Lario · Lake Como
Nine individual rooms and suites, gardens at the water’s edge and a pool overlooking Lake Como: a small resort for time together, good food and a restful pause within a wider journey.
The ExpertoItaly view
Villa Lario Resort makes most sense when the hotel is a substantial part of the holiday. Breakfast on your terrace, a few hours beside the pool and dinner overlooking the water can fill a day quite happily. We would leave space for that, alongside one or two carefully chosen outings.
The early twentieth-century villa stands in extensive private grounds in Mandello del Lario. Its nine rooms and suites occupy three different settings: the main house, the historic boathouse and the lakeside caves. Choosing between them changes the character of your stay.
For a couple, we would start with Bellagio or Varenna if a furnished terrace matters most, or Tivano and Breva if you want to be closer to the water. The trade-off is that this is a stay to plan around the property; evenings out and public transport need more thought than at a hotel in the middle of a lakeside village.
Our starting point: three to five nights, particularly at the end of a cultural or rail holiday. A full week suits guests who actively want several unstructured days.

Planning your stay
Best for
The strongest fit is a couple who values outdoor space, a good room and time together at the hotel. It works particularly well for an anniversary or honeymoon, with the room choice doing much of the work.
After a journey
A useful way to finish a city or rail itinerary: arrive, unpack properly and alternate a lake excursion with time in the gardens. Avoid treating it as a one-night sightseeing stop.
Families
Dervio can take up to four guests and Mandello up to three. We check the additional beds against children’s ages and your need for privacy; the resort’s small scale suits families comfortable with a quieter hotel atmosphere.
Practical fit
A car-free stay works with arranged transfers and planned outings. Budget for the meals and private experiences you want, as the pool and lake setting may make you keen to spend several days at the resort.
The grounds extend between the villa and waterfront. Tell us about any need for step-free access so we can confirm the complete route to your room, restaurant, pool and beach. The hotel also hosts weddings and private events; we check plans for your dates if peace and quiet is a priority.
Rooms and suites
The nine individual rooms and suites differ in outlook, outdoor space and layout. Air conditioning and Wi-Fi are provided throughout; terraces and private gardens belong to specific named categories.
Our room advice
Tell us how you imagine spending the day. Bellagio and Varenna suit breakfast and reading on a terrace; Breva and Tivano put you beside the lake. Grigna and Meria offer the most unusual setting. We recommend the named room rather than relying on a broad “suite” description.

For a generous terrace
A lake-facing suite for two with a sitting room and a 35 m² furnished terrace. Our first choice when you want generous indoor space as well as somewhere to spend a substantial part of the day outside.

For terrace living
A suite for two in the main villa, with a sitting room and a 25 m² furnished terrace overlooking the lake. A strong alternative to Bellagio when the terrace matters more than maximum floor space.

For the boathouse setting
A two-person suite in the historic Darsena, with lake and beach views, a furnished private garden and access to the equipped beach. Its layout is split over two levels, an important distinction if stairs are a concern.

For proximity to the water
Also in the Darsena and designed for two, with lake and beach views, a furnished private garden and access to the equipped beach. Choose it for the relationship with the waterfront; it is a different experience from a terrace high in the villa.

For an unusual waterside room
Grigna is 34 m² and Meria 30 m², each for two guests. These lake-view rooms occupy the cave setting and have access to a reserved cave lounge. We would choose them for that particular atmosphere; they do not offer Bellagio’s or Varenna’s large private terrace.

For up to four guests
A sitting room and space for up to two additional beds make Dervio the clearest starting point for a family. Its views are of the park and part of the lake, so it should be chosen for space and occupancy rather than a full lake panorama.

For a smaller suite
A main-villa suite with lake and pool views and space for one additional bed. The hotel lists a wheelchair-accessible bathroom; we confirm the whole access route and the facilities you need before recommending it for reduced mobility.

For a mountain outlook
A double room for two with a mountain view and a walk-in wardrobe. It gives access to the resort’s shared grounds and facilities, but it is not a lake-view room and should not be booked expecting the terraces shown in the suites above.
Life at Villa Lario Resort

Morning
Breakfast is included. The hotel offers it in your room or on its terrace or private garden, where available, without an additional service charge. A category with outdoor space makes this a particularly appealing start to the day.
Through the day
The outdoor pool is on site, within the private park. There are two private beaches with lake access, one equipped. The Open Air restaurant serves light lunches around the pool, gazebo and lakeside terrace. We confirm seasonal opening for your dates.
Evening
Grill & Lounge provides the more informal evening option. Amandus, listed in the Michelin Guide, is the restaurant for a more considered dinner and takes reservations, including from non-residents. We plan any special meal ahead.
A private boat trip can begin at the resort’s jetty, while a private dinner can be arranged in the panoramic gazebo. We discuss the duration, menu and cost with you in advance; these are optional arrangements, separate from the room and breakfast.

Location and getting around
Villa Lario Resort is on Via Statale in Mandello del Lario, on Lake Como’s eastern shore, around 10 km from Lecco. The grounds provide the immediate setting; for restaurants in town, sightseeing and public boat trips, we plan how you will get there and back.
Mandello has rail and public boat connections. We check the seasonal sailing timetable before building a day around Bellagio, Varenna or another lakeside town. The hotel’s own jetty is for private arrivals and excursions, not a public ferry stop.
From Milan, rail travel via Lecco connects with Mandello. We would arrange station collection for guests with luggage, or a private transfer from the airport, and plan the main excursions in advance.
A car is useful for wider independent touring, but is not essential for a stay centred on the resort with arranged transport. Private parking and electric-car charging are available on site.
Our Lake Como holiday ideas help put the stay in context. If walking out each evening and making spontaneous boat trips are your priorities, compare the village setting of Hotel Royal Victoria in Varenna.
Hotel location
Where it fits
Choose one clear contrast, then give both places time. Villa Lario works particularly well as the restful part of a wider holiday.

Art, architecture & the lake
Begin with galleries, the Duomo and city restaurants, then slow the pace in Mandello. The journey via Lecco keeps the transition practical, with a transfer for the final leg.

Royal collections & café life
Spend several nights with Turin’s museums, palaces and cafés before a quieter lakeside stay. Travel east by rail through Milan, allowing time for the onward connection.

City exploration, then time to rest
Follow Venice’s art, neighbourhood walks and busy days on foot with time in Villa Lario’s gardens. This is a proper change of base by rail via Milan, followed by an arranged arrival.
For seven nights, we would generally use one base; a week here should include plenty of time at the resort. Ten to fourteen nights usually works best with two bases, including three to five nights at Villa Lario. Add a third only when the route and your interests justify another move.
After the mountains
After a stay in the Engadin and the Bernina railway journey to Tirano, the eastern shore of Lake Como is a logical place to pause. We choose the onward train connection and arrange the final transfer to the resort, leaving several nights for the lake.
Our Swiss Alps, Lake Como & Milan rail holiday gives a useful starting point. It currently uses Royal Victoria in Varenna; we can discuss Villa Lario as an alternative and adapt the travel arrangements and price around it.
