The ExpertoItaly view

A hotel to give your time to

Fragsburg earns its place in our selection through the pleasure of staying here: breakfast above the valley, a quiet corner of the garden, a swim after an outing and a good dinner to look forward to.

The hotel occupies a hunting lodge built in 1624, beneath the estate’s separate medieval castle. Twenty individually furnished rooms and suites, antique pieces and the ivy-covered exterior give it the character of a private house.

We recommend it for a leisurely couples’ holiday, with Merano, gardens and wine country adding variety. The view stretches across the Adige Valley towards the Texel Group mountains, and there is every reason to leave some afternoons free.

Our starting point: a Junior Suite or Suite Deluxe, half-board and four or five nights within a twin-centre holiday. Choose a full week when the hotel itself is the main attraction.

Who it suits

For couples who enjoy being at the hotel

Time together

A special occasion

For an anniversary or honeymoon, the individual suites, mountain outlook and a reserved evening at Prezioso give the stay a clear sense of occasion.

Food & wine

Dinner is part of the holiday

A changing Orangerie dinner, South Tyrolean wines and the separate gourmet restaurant make Fragsburg particularly rewarding for couples who enjoy eating well.

A leisurely week

Explore, then settle back in

Visit Merano, spend a morning in the gardens at Trauttmansdorff or take a local walk, then return to the pool with the rest of the afternoon free.

Rooms & suites

Choose space, outlook and individual character

The rooms are individually styled, with air conditioning and outdoor space in the categories below. For a longer stay, the extra sitting space in a suite makes a useful difference.

A separate place to sit within one of the hotel’s suites.

A comfortable starting point

Junior Suite · 28–35 m²

A sitting area and balcony, with an outlook towards the vineyards or the Texel mountains. Our first choice for couples who want private space to read or enjoy a drink between outings. The bathroom has a rain shower.

More room for a longer stay

Suite Deluxe · 40–50 m²

A larger sitting area and a balcony or terrace, with interiors ranging from traditional hunting-lodge woodwork to decorative wallpaper and antiques. A worthwhile upgrade for a week with plenty of time at the hotel.

For a special occasion

Suite Royale · 65–85 m²

Generous living space, a balcony or terrace, a walk-in wardrobe and a bathroom with a bath and separate rain shower. The garden and mountain outlook adds to the appeal; selected suites also have an infrared sauna.

A smaller alternative

Deluxe Double · 25 m²

An intimate double with a balcony facing the vineyards or mountains. A sensible choice for couples who prefer to spend most of their day in the gardens and shared spaces, while retaining the same hotel and dining experience.

Food & wine

Long breakfasts and two ways to dine

Breakfast Royale

A leisurely start

Breakfast is included and served from 7.30am until 11am. Breads, pastries, local cheeses, fruit and freshly prepared hot dishes make it worth taking your time over the first meal of the day.

Optional half-board

Dinner in the Orangerie

Half-board adds a changing five-course dinner in the Orangerie. There is also an à la carte option. We particularly like half-board here: you can enjoy an aperitivo and dinner without another journey down to town.

A separate gourmet evening

Prezioso

The Michelin-starred restaurant draws on South Tyrolean produce and ingredients from the estate’s Soul Garden. Reserve an evening here as a separate dining experience, charged in addition to the usual board arrangement.

Pool & gardens

Leave room for an afternoon here

The grounds extend over 50,000 m², with roses, fruit trees and places to sit. The heated outdoor pool measures 8 × 13 metres, with a separate whirlpool looking towards the vineyards and mountains.

These spaces give real value to a longer stay. You can explore in the morning and swim later, or spend a whole day at the hotel with a book, a treatment and an unhurried dinner.

The garden gym offers another way to keep active between walks. The pace is yours to choose.

Castellum Natura spa

Botanical treatments and time to unwind

Castellum Natura offers massages, individual treatments and bathing experiences using freshly prepared botanical products. One of its distinctive experiences is a bath in a larch-wood tub on the panoramic loggia.

The hotel’s shared wellness facilities include a Finnish sauna, herbal bio sauna, steam room, infrared cabin and a relaxation room. Pool and sauna access are included; individual treatments and bathing experiences are booked separately at an additional charge.

We would leave a quiet afternoon for a treatment, followed by time in the garden before dinner.

Location & getting around

Above Merano, with South Tyrol to explore

Merano is approximately 15 minutes away by car, along a winding hillside road. Its arcaded streets, riverside walks and cafés make a rewarding outing, while the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff and nearby wine estates add variety to a week.

A hire car gives you freedom for independent visits and wider touring; private outdoor parking is included. For a wine-tasting day, an arranged driver lets you enjoy the visit together.

A car-free stay also works well with planned transfers. ExpertoItaly can arrange a private transfer from Merano or Bolzano railway station, or from your previous accommodation, and transport for selected outings.

Give each place time

For seven nights, Fragsburg can be your only base, with occasional outings. For ten to fourteen nights, we usually recommend two bases, allowing four or five nights here. Add a third only when the route and the time available make the extra move worthwhile.

For an Alta Badia pairing, explore Hotel La Majun in La Villa and ask ExpertoItaly to shape the two stays around your dates.
