Northern Italy: lakes & mountainsTailor-made Lake Garda holidays

Lake life, hillside retreats and a well-chosen second stop

A harbour town with restaurants on your doorstep, a country house above the water, or a contemporary retreat near Arco: the right base makes all the difference on Lake Garda. We help you choose the setting, the hotel and the pace, then put the journeys between them together.

Stay for a settled week, or combine Garda with Verona, Venice, the Dolomites or the villages of the Mincio valley. The aim is time to enjoy each place, with a clear reason for every move.

Where to stay

Start with the kind of days you want

Town life & the water

Malcesine & Bardolino

For evenings on foot, lakefront walks and boat outings. Malcesine brings a mountain backdrop; Bardolino suits a gentler mix of promenade life and wine-country excursions. A carefully chosen town hotel can work well without a car.

Views & breathing space

The hills above the lake

For couples who value gardens, a pool and time at a smaller hotel. Above Gargnano, Salò or Bardolino, the setting becomes part of the holiday. These stays suit self-drive travellers who are happy to drive for outings.

Design & outdoor days

Arco & northern Garda

For a distinctive hotel stay with walking, cycling and wellness in the mix. Arco has its own local life, inland from the lake. Riva and the waterfront are outings from here; the transport choice depends on the hotel and your plans.

Give Lake Garda a worthwhile contrast

For around ten nights, two bases usually give a satisfying balance. With a fortnight, there is room for a third when it adds something different. These existing journeys are starting points: we adjust the hotels, nights and travel arrangements around you.

Verona, Merano & Lake Garda
City, mountains & lake

Verona, Merano & Lake Garda

A varied holiday for couples, moving from Verona’s cultural life to Merano and a final lake stay. We allow enough time at each stop to enjoy the hotel as well as the surroundings.

Venice, Alta Badia & Arco
A 14-night journey

Venice, Alta Badia & Arco

Venice on foot, mountain days in Alta Badia and a design-led finish around Arco. A good choice when walking and distinctive places to stay matter as much as the lake itself.

Venice, Prosecco Hills & Lake Garda
A 14-night journey

Venice, Prosecco Hills & Lake Garda

Combine the city with vineyard country and time by the water. The changes of setting give this route its appeal, with driving introduced for the parts where it is useful.

A shorter, quieter combination

Borghetto sul Mincio and Valeggio pair well with Garda for river walks, gardens and village evenings. We can shape a two-centre stay around Borghetto and Malcesine, or Borghetto and Arco, choosing the hotels to give each part a distinct feel.

Our hotel collection

Choose the hotel for its setting

These hotels serve different purposes. Some make it easy to step out for dinner; others are places to settle in and enjoy the grounds, views or spa. We advise on the room as carefully as the hotel.

Practical planning

A good Garda holiday starts with the logistics

Do you need a car?

A town stay in Malcesine or Bardolino can work without one, using arranged arrival transfers and suitable boat or bus services. Hillside retreats are better suited to self-drive. In Arco, we look at the exact hotel and outings rather than assuming a car is essential.

Driving around the lake can be slow at busy times, and parking is part of the planning. We organise the route around where you are staying, rather than making every day a long circuit.

Arriving by rail

Peschiera del Garda and Desenzano serve the southern shore. Northern stays need an onward journey; Rovereto may suit Arco or Riva. We choose the station and transfer together, based on your route and hotel.

ExpertoItaly arranges rail travel, accommodation, transfers and car hire as part of your land-only holiday. Flights are booked separately.

How long should you stay?

A week gives you time to settle into one base. For ten to fourteen nights, a second destination often adds more than repeatedly changing hotels around the lake. A north-and-south Garda stay can still work when the two hotels offer distinctly different experiences.

When to go

Late spring and early autumn are worth considering for walking and exploring. High summer suits pool and lake time, with busier roads and towns. Boat services, mountain access and hotel facilities vary seasonally; we check the arrangements for your dates.
