Set in Chianti Classico countryside replete with olive groves and vineyards, Lupaia seems far from anywhere - yet it’s less than 15 minutes’ drive from the medieval streets of Montepulciano and Pienza, a Unesco-listed Renaissance town. Siena is just 45 minutes away, and you’re right in the heart of one of the most famous wine regions in the world, so plan on visits to tasting rooms and wineries.

Originally a 17th-century manor laid on the foundations of a millennium-old house, Lupaia was at one time a goat farm. But this hilltop estate has been transformed into the most romantic Tuscan vision - the sort of place so stylish, you’d expect to see it in magazines, yet it’s also remarkably relaxing, making you feel right at home.

You can lounge away hours in the blink of an eye on one of the Salon’s sofas, while the scent of thyme, oregano and rose accompany your walks through the gardens. Poolside lounging comes with views over the gentle, lush hills, covered in cypress and olive trees, and out to Montepulciano.

The estate’s six rooms and six suites are spread between five renovated farm buildings, built in stone and swathed in ivy. All have views of the gardens or Tuscan countryside, plus a terrace or garden with wisteria, flowerbeds or a lawn.

Natural aged wood sets the tone, from smooth hardwood floors to rough-hewn wood-beamed ceilings painted in whites and pale greys. Bathroom decor is pretty and feminine, while the suites all have walk-in showers and freestanding Victorian bathtubs.

The beautiful open-plan kitchen-dining area dates to 1622 and serves three delicious meals a day. Help yourself to the buffet breakfast of homemade breads, cakes, cheeses, fruits and local delicacies. Take it outside on warm sunny days, or at the table near the kitchen in the cooler months.

Light lunches of salads, sandwiches and pastas can be brought to you by the pool, on your room’s private terrace or in the restaurant. Dinners are taken by the open fire with its huge oak lintel, where Tuscan specialities will be brought to your table.
