A relaxing ride, time among the gardens and an aperitivo to finish: our suggestion for a half-day together.

A half-day I would make time for

I rode an e-bike from Borghetto sul Mincio to Parco Giardino Sigurtà and spent a wonderfully relaxing half-day cycling through the park, enjoying the greenery and the views over the countryside below. If you are staying in Borghetto, this is a visit I would put firmly on your list.

My visit was in September. The photographs here show what appealed to me: open lawns, mature trees, water lilies and paths that invite you to keep exploring. There is plenty to enjoy even when the famous spring tulips have finished.

For couples, it makes a lovely shared outing. Allow time to stop, leave the bikes while you explore on foot and bring a light picnic. Afterwards, settle into the town centre of Valeggio sul Mincio for an aperitivo, or head back to Borghetto for a table beside the river.

Sigurtà sits in Valeggio sul Mincio, close to Borghetto and within reach of southern Lake Garda. It fits particularly well into a stay that combines time by the lake with a few days in the countryside. Our Borghetto sul Mincio guide is a useful starting point for planning those days.

An unhurried outing

By e-bike from Borghetto

An e-bike makes a good companion for this visit, particularly for the climb from the river towards Valeggio. Ask your accommodation or bike supplier to show you the route to the entrance on Via Cavour: the approach to the park involves local roads, so do not expect an entirely traffic-free ride from your door.

Inside, the suggested cycling itinerary covers approximately 10 km of porphyry paths, with gentle ups and downs. You can bring your own bicycle without an additional bike admission charge; the normal park ticket still applies. E-bikes can also be hired inside, subject to availability, and are not reservable.

Shaded paths make it easy to pause between garden visits.

Think of the bicycle as a way to move between places you want to spend time. Ride slowly around other visitors, use the racks when stopping and explore the smaller garden spaces on foot. There is no need to complete every path to enjoy the visit.

If you would rather not cycle

Walking works well if you choose a manageable area and allow plenty of breaks. Electric golf carts offer another option; the driver needs the required licence and an identity document. The panoramic train gives a roughly 35-minute overview without stops. Check the park’s visiting options and hire conditions before deciding.

What to look out for

Lawns, water gardens and views

The pleasure of Sigurtà is having room to pause. Leave space in your plans for a bench, a photograph or a few minutes looking across the landscape. These are the places I would build a first visit around.

The lawns and mature trees

The Grande Tappeto Erboso is one of the park’s broadest green spaces. Elsewhere, the Great Oak is more than 400 years old. Give the trees as much attention as the flowerbeds: they bring scale and shape to the garden throughout the visiting season.

The ponds and water gardens

The Giardini Acquatici and other ponds reward a slower look, with reflections, planting and changing light. Water lilies are a summer highlight. My September photographs also capture how much interest remains around the water later in the season.

The Rose Avenue and the labyrinth

The kilometre-long Viale delle Rose frames the Scaligero Castle of Valeggio in the distance. The castle is outside the park, despite the way the view brings it into the garden. The labyrinth, covering 2,500 square metres, is another stop to explore on foot.

The water gardens offer another reason to leave the bike and explore on foot.

The countryside beyond the garden

Make time for the Passeggiata Panoramica, with views towards Borghetto and the Mincio valley. Looking out over the surrounding countryside was one of the pleasures of my ride: it gives the visit a sense of the wider landscape you are staying in.

Find these stops on the park’s guide to its main sights.

Leave time for lunch

A picnic, then an aperitivo

For two people, keep the picnic simple: sandwiches, fruit, water and a light blanket that fits into a pannier or small bag. A leisurely lunch gives you a reason to stop enjoying the garden through a camera and sit in it for a while.

The park allows a packed lunch on a blanket on the grass. Tables, chairs, barbecue equipment and other picnic structures are not permitted. There are also refreshment kiosks for a coffee, sandwich or ice cream; openings vary across the park. See the picnic rules and refreshment options.

Afterwards, choose the setting that appeals. Valeggio’s town centre offers a pleasant change from the greenery, with time to sit in the square. Borghetto brings you back to the river and its old mill buildings. If you are hiring bikes, plan around their return time so that the last part of the day feels relaxed too.

Our suggestion is to leave the rest of the day open. A half-day in the park, a late lunch or picnic and an aperitivo are quite enough. You can always stay for dinner if you feel like making an evening of it.

Tulipanomania and the changing garden

Tulipanomania is Sigurtà’s best-known flowering display, with more than a million tulips spread through the garden in spring. It is a compelling reason to plan a visit, particularly if flowers are the focus of your holiday.

The usual window runs from the second half of March into April; some late varieties can continue into early May. Weather affects the timing, so check the park’s current flowering updates before booking a trip around the tulips.

What to look for through the visiting season
Season Garden highlights
March–April Tulipanomania, with narcissi and hyacinths among the other spring flowers.
May–June Irises and peonies, followed by roses along the Rose Avenue from June.
Summer Water lilies, lotus flowers and summer planting; allow time for shaded breaks.
September–November Dahlias, asters and autumn foliage as the season progresses.

This is a seasonal guide, not a guaranteed flowering timetable. Consult the official flowering guide for the plants and displays that interest you.

Events to look out for

Alongside the flowers, Sigurtà runs a changing programme of events. These can give a visit a very different atmosphere, so check the calendar whether you want to join in or prefer a quieter garden day.

  • Summer exhibitions: the 2026 programme included Cracking Nature, an outdoor art exhibition. Temporary installations vary by season.
  • Viaggio nel Tempo: a September event with nineteenth-century costumes, historic dancing, music and carriage displays. The 2026 edition took place on 20 September.
  • Festival d’Autunno: the autumn programme celebrates foliage; related dates can include Sabato d’Artista, for drawing and painting in the park.
  • Halloween events: themed activities and a separate Halloween run appear towards the end of the visiting season.

For couples whose priority is a peaceful ride and picnic, we would choose an ordinary weekday outside school holidays where possible. If an event appeals, check its admission and booking arrangements separately.

Autumn 2026 update: the park has also announced a special planting of 100,000 tulip bulbs for an autumn display. Check the flowering update before travelling; this should not be assumed to repeat on the same dates every year.
