Nerano · Massa Lubrense · On the water
A transparent-kayak excursion with Chasing Syrens offers a different way to explore the coves around Nerano and Baia di Ieranto. It is an outing to build into a stay on the Sorrentine Peninsula, with time for paddling and enjoying the shoreline.
Start from Marina del Cantone
The departure point is Marina del Cantone, the waterfront below Nerano in the district of Massa Lubrense. Baia di Ieranto lies towards the peninsula’s western tip, facing the waters between Punta Campanella and Capri.
This is a separate experience from kayaking from Amalfi. Choose according to where you are staying: a morning on the water should not require an unnecessarily long journey across the peninsula. Our Bay of Naples and Amalfi Coast geographical guide explains the relationship between the bases.
What the transparent kayak adds
The clear hull lets you look down into the water as well as towards the cliffs. Underwater visibility varies with light and sea conditions; the pleasure is observing the surroundings at paddling pace, without expecting particular wildlife sightings.
Chasing Syrens lists its Ieranto excursion as a four-hour tour, returning to Marina del Cantone, with stops for swimming, snorkelling or rest. The advertised route includes coastal coves and caves, but the guide may change it according to sea conditions. Confirm the departure time and arrangements for your date with the operator’s current tour programme.
Allow a half-day for the activity itself, plus the journey to and from the meeting point. It works particularly well when the rest of the day is left free for lunch and time locally.
Ieranto: landscape, mythology and a former quarry
Ieranto belongs to the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area. The surrounding limestone slopes, olive terraces and Mediterranean vegetation form a landscape with a history of human use as well as natural interest.
The bay is associated with the Sirens encountered by Odysseus in classical tradition. That is a mythological connection, rather than an established location for the events of the Odyssey. More recent history is visible in the remains of the limestone quarry, which operated until the 1950s. FAI has restored the land and its agricultural and industrial traces.
For the wider setting and current local notices, see FAI’s Baia di Ieranto information. Swimming stops and access to individual stretches of shore should follow the arrangements confirmed by the guide.
Who it suits and what to check
This is an active excursion: you need to be comfortable paddling and getting into and out of a kayak. The operator requires participants to be able to swim and lists the main tours for children over eight, accompanied by an adult. A separate shorter Easy Tour has different age requirements.
Confirm suitability for your party before booking, including any mobility concerns and the combined weight limit for the transparent kayak. Bring sun protection, water, a towel and suitable footwear; check snorkelling equipment arrangements. Keep belongings protected from water.
Read the operator’s participation requirements and cancellation terms. Tour and participation information checked in September 2026; reconfirm for your travel dates.
Getting there without a car
From Sorrento, check the SITA bus to Marina del Cantone against the tour’s check-in time, including the return service. A private transfer can make an early departure simpler. From Positano or further along the Amalfi Coast, assess the road journey before committing to this particular excursion.
If driving, allow time to park and reach the meeting point. Guests already staying around Nerano or Massa Lubrense should ask their accommodation about the most convenient local arrangement.
Make it part of a peninsula stay
A kayak morning gives variety to a leisurely holiday around Massa Lubrense and Nerano, alongside walks, swimming and time at your hotel. It can also fit into a Sorrento stay when the transport works comfortably.
