Sorrento is a captivating town situated on Italyโs southern coast, in the Campania region. Perched on the Sorrentine Peninsula, it overlooks the Bay of Naples with breathtaking views of Mount Vesuvius on the horizon.
Just 50 km (31 miles) south of Naples, Sorrento is a perfect starting point for exploring nearby destinations like the Amalfi Coast, Capri, and Pompeii.
The town is accessible by train, ferry, and car, offering a seamless blend of natural beauty, history, and convenience.
Getting around Sorrento is easy, thanks to its strategic location and variety of transportation choices:
Buses: SITA Sud buses offer routes connecting Sorrento to cities like Naples, Salerno, and Positano. Tickets can be purchased on the bus, at ticket machines, or via the UnicoCampania app.
Trains: The Circumvesuviana railway links Sorrento with Naples and Pompeii. For longer routes, Trenitalia and Italo services extend to Rome and beyond.
Ferries: Alilauro, Navigazione Libera del Golfo, and Caremar ferries provide connections to Capri, Ischia, Positano,ย and Amalfi.
Taxis & Car Rentals:ย Taxis are readily available but can be expensive. While car rentals provide flexibility, parking and navigating traffic can be stressful, especially during peak season. However, for a truly unforgettable experience, consider renting a convertible for a day to experience the Amalfi Drive, one of the most famous roads in the world.
Scooters & Bikes: Renting a scooter or bike is a fun and efficient way to navigate Sorrentoโs charming streets. Shops throughout town provide rental services.
Walking through these pathways feels like stepping back in time, with artisan shops, small piazzas, and cafes lining the streets.
Sorrentoโs historic centre is a delightful mix of narrow, cobbled streets, ancient architecture, and a lively local culture.
Piazza Tasso: As the main square, this lively spot is perfect for enjoying an espresso while watching the world go by. โ
Corso Italia: The central avenue is filled with boutique shops and gelato stands. Explore side streets to find local crafts, including inlaid woodwork and handmade leather products.
Duomo di Sorrento: This 11th-century cathedral boasts impressive frescoes and a striking facade, making it a must-see.
Sedile Dominova: One of the last medieval meeting halls in the area, this Renaissance building showcases intricate arches and frescoed walls.
The townโs history is deeply rooted in ancient times:
Roman Influence: Sorrento was a favoured spot for Roman aristocrats, who built summer villas along the coast. Its location made it an important hub for trade and culture.
Byzantine and Medieval Eras: Under the Byzantine Empire, Sorrento remained influential and fortified itself against invasions. Despite a significant attack by Turkish forces in 1551, the resilient town was rebuilt and flourished again.
Lemon Cultivation: Following the Turkish invasions, Sorrento shifted its focus to agriculture, becoming famous for its lemon groves. By the 18th century, the town was celebrated as โthe land where lemons bloom.โ ๐
Sorrentoโs attractions range from art and history to stunning natural scenery:
Museo Correale di Terranova ๐จ: This museum holds Baroque art, ancient artifacts, and pieces showcasing Sorrentoโs artistic heritage, including Neapolitan inlaid woodwork.

EXCELLENT Based on 65 reviews Elaine Yeoh8 November 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We engaged Antonio Cresce to plan and manage our 2.5 week holiday in Italy - covering regions around Turin, Lake Maggiore and Verona. He was amazing from the planning stages, helping us to pick towns as bases, according to our needs and interests . We had video calls with him where he listened to what we wanted and we planned the details together. When we were in Italy, he kept in close contact and was readily available for any questions or issues we came across . The hotels he chose were incredible , and the excursions from the towns we stayed in were interesting and great experiences. His contacts, his experience and his professionalism made our holiday in Italy seamless and a truly wonderful experience! We would highly recommend Antonio from Expert to Italy ! Antonio helped us decide exactly where to go based on what we wanted and went above and beyond for us. His knowledge is incredible and everything was organised so well, he listened to us and answered every question we had along the way. Each place we stayed in was the best accommodation available in the area and we couldn't have asked for more, without his expertise the trip would not have been as perfect as it was. We will always go through him in future when heading to Italy. Jeremy Lewis14 September 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Antonio proved a fantastic agent. An absolutely stunning holiday. Organised totally by Antonio. His attention to detail was exceptional. All the train journey, ferry and taxi's all went like clockwork. Even when our train was delayed he changed the ferry tickets. He chose the Botania Hotel in Ischia, the service was the best we've had anywhere. The island is so beautiful. Antonio also gave us a list of where to vist on the Island. Would definitely use Antonio again for our next visit to Italy or Sicily.
