Extending your holiday in Milan or Lake Como

Enjoy mountain-top perfection and sweeping panoramic views over the Engladine mountains and St Moritz valley from this traditional alpine hotel, positioned at almost 2500m at the summit of the Muottas Muragl funicular.

The photo-opportunities start the minute you board the cable car (the only way up to the hotel), which in summer whisks you past mountains slopes dotted with sweetly-smelling wild flowers to a warm welcome at the top of the ride.

The hotel has just sixteen rooms, ranging from a standard double to the Bernina Junior Suite, a 26m² room with a separate living room and roof terrace. If nothing but a room with a view will do, the 16m² Bellavista attic room, which looks out over the St Moritz valley, is your best bet. Bedrooms are simply furnished in traditional alpine style, with pine furnishings and crisp white sheets and some rooms have terraces.

Top spot at the hotel for soaking up the sun and views over the Upper Engadine lake plateau is the magnificent Panorama Terrace. It also serves as an outdoor extension of the main restaurant, offering a good lunch menu with waiter service.

There are two other restaurants. In the Panorama restaurant, there are romantic candlelight dinners accompanied by views over the twinkling lights in the valley below and a menu which features a combination of regional and Mediterranean dishes. The restaurant is also open at lunchtime. More informal dining is available in the buffet-style Scatla restaurant which also has its own outdoor terrace. Not surprisingly, breakfast is a hearty affair, a generous spread of, largely organic, local bread, cheese, meat, muesli and yoghurt.

Accessible only from the funicular departing from Punt Muragl, the hotel is the ideal starting point for the fabulous Bernina Express train journey from nearby St Moritz. St Moritz is ten minutes away by bus from the bottom of the cable car and worth visiting for its big-name designer boutiques.

There are several wonderful walks from the hotel, ranging in length from 45 minutes to a couple of hours, which will reward you with wonderful views of the mountains, valley and the glacier. If you are travelling with children, there is a good children’s playground close to the hotel, with a fortress, climbing wall and other activities.

Fly or take the train to Zurich. From here, it is a comfortable journey on the super-efficient Swiss rail network train to Chur and then to Punt Muragl, with just one easy change at Samedan.
