A walk through his native Naples

For Vittorio Sciosia, this was a walk through his home city on an exceptional evening. Camera in hand, he moved among café tables, supporters in narrow streets and the crowds gathered in Piazza del Plebiscito.

Napoli’s 2–0 win over Cagliari on 23 May 2025 secured the club’s fourth Scudetto, the Italian league title. Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku scored the goals. Away from the stadium, the match brought people together around screens, in bars and out in the streets.

Vittorio’s photographs look at that shared occasion at street level. Broad views of the crowds sit alongside smaller encounters: two children posing for the camera, people watching from a balcony, a table outside a café. Together, they give a sense of how the celebrations occupied familiar parts of Naples.

Faces and familiar symbols

Maradona, shirts and painted faces

Maradona appears repeatedly in this sequence: on shirts, in painted portraits and on the walls behind the supporters. His image forms part of the streets themselves, as well as the way fans dress for the occasion.

The portraits bring the scale back to individuals. Two young supporters, their faces painted blue, pause for the camera; elsewhere, groups in number 10 shirts stand together in the lanes. Vittorio gives these encounters as much attention as the larger gatherings.

A city gathering

Piazza del Plebiscito in blue

In Piazza del Plebiscito, the photographs open out. Flags rise above the crowd, while the screen and surrounding façades establish the scale of the gathering. The square becomes a place to watch the match together.

A view from a balcony offers another perspective. The two supporters in the foreground remain the focus, with the crowded piazza beyond them. It is a characteristic shift in the sequence: from the collective scene to the people within it.

Watching and celebrating

The match moves into the streets

Back in the narrower streets, watching football becomes a neighbourhood gathering. Chairs face a screen, café tables share the pavement with standing spectators, and people fill the space between the buildings.

The evening photographs record different moods: concentrated attention, raised arms, drinks held above the crowd. They need little explanation. The pleasure is in looking from one face to another and noticing how many individual reactions fit within a single frame.
