Varenna is a serene, picturesque village on Lake Como’s eastern shore. Whether you are planning a quiet weekend retreat or a fall adventure, this guide is here to help you get the most out of your trip. And, the best part? No car is needed!
You’ll be stepping into a calm, car-free experience. Ready to explore this beautiful lakeside treasure? Let’s dive right in! 😍✨
Varenna sits perfectly along the Milano-Tirano rail line, making it the ideal choice for travellers wanting to escape the hassle of driving. With stunning lake views and an inviting, laid-back atmosphere, Varenna is an excellent base for exploring Lake Como or venturing north to catch the Bernina Express in Tirano.
What makes it even better? You’re just an hour away from Milan, meaning you can leave the city behind and unwind by the lake in no time. The best times to visit are during spring and autumn, with mild temperatures and nature’s beauty all around—spring brings blooming flowers, and autumn dresses the village in rich fall colours.
Founded in 493 AD, Varenna has a long and interesting history, from its days as a small fishing village to its time under the rule of kings and queens. The steep terrain made farming difficult, but its location on the lake allowed fishing to thrive. Overlooking the village, the Castello di Vezio was likely built in the 6th century by Queen Teodolinda of the Lombards.
Today, Varenna’s old houses, stone stairways, and centuries-old buildings make it the perfect place for a slow, scenic walk. And if you visit in July, check out the yearly celebration with fireworks and floating lanterns! 🎇
The narrow, winding alleyways of Varenna are like stepping into a different era. These steep streets are lined with cosy little restaurants and homes, often leading you down toward the lake, where the real magic of Varenna comes to life.
The more you walk, the more you’ll discover, with plants growing along the walls and scenic views at nearly every corner. You’ll want to take your time, because each path has its own story. 🌿
At the heart of Varenna lies the San Giorgio Church, a classic piece of 14th-century Lombard architecture. The church’s impressive frescoes and quiet atmosphere make it a must-see for history and art lovers.
You’ll find it in Piazza San Giorgio, next to the tiny Church of San Giovanni Battista, one of the oldest on Lake Como. Both are windows into the region’s religious past, with San Giovanni offering a more intimate glimpse.
Varenna’s lakeside promenade is perfect for anyone looking for a peaceful walk by the water. Following the red railing along the shore gives you amazing views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains.
There’s also the ‘Lovers’ Walk,’ a short, romantic path that hugs the lake’s edge and is great for taking in the view. It doesn’t matter if you go in the morning or at sunset—this lakeside path is the place to relax and enjoy the scenery. ❤️
High above Varenna, Castello di Vezio is a medieval fortress with some of the best panoramic views of Lake Como. Built in the 11th century, the castle’s falconry displays and ghost sculptures add a fun, whimsical touch to its rich history.
The scenic 30-minute hike up to the castle makes the trip all the more rewarding. If you’re looking for something unique, Castello di Vezio is a must-see.
Villa Monastero is one of Varenna’s top attractions, with a museum and sprawling botanical gardens along the lake. Once a Cistercian convent, the villa is now a museum filled with historic furnishings and artifacts. Its gardens stretch for nearly two kilometers along the lake, offering a peaceful space to stroll among exotic plants, fountains, and statues.
Whether you’re into history or just love nature, Villa Monastero is worth a visit.
If you’re a bird lover, don’t miss the Luigi Scanagatta Ornithological Museum. It’s a small but fascinating museum with over 1,000 bird species on display.
Founded in 1962 by local ornithologist Luigi Scanagatta, the museum is a fun stop where you can learn all about the birdlife of Lake Como. Plus, it’s right in the center of Varenna.
Outdoor lovers will enjoy hiking along the Sentiero del Viandante, which offers different trails with stunning lake views. Whether you’re up for a 2-3 hour hike to Bellano or a full-day trek to Abbadia, the trails let you soak in the scenic beauty of Lake Como.
The walk to Bellano is fairly easy and passes through picturesque villages, while the route to Abbadia is more challenging but rewarding. Put on your hiking boots and explore!
The Greenway dei Patriarchi is a lovely 6-kilometer trail that takes you from Varenna to Fiumelatte, a nearby village. Named after the elders of Varenna, the path winds through olive groves and the countryside.
With only a slight elevation gain, this is an easy walk for all, offering wonderful views of the lake along the way.
After a full day of exploring, eat at Ristorante Visteria, located in the Royal Victoria Hotel. The veranda offers gorgeous views of the lake, shaded by wisteria, while you enjoy delicious Italian cuisine. It’s the perfect way to wrap up your day in Varenna.
Varenna is amazing, but if you want to explore more of Lake Como, here are some nearby towns worth visiting:
Bellagio: Known as the “pearl of Lake Como” 🌸🏞️ with its stunning gardens and charming cobbled streets.
Menaggio: Offers a beautiful lakeside promenade 🚶♀️🌅 and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
Tremezzo: Home to Villa Carlotta 🏛️🌿, a historic mansion featuring incredible botanical gardens and art.
These towns are easy to reach by ferry ⛴️ and perfect for day trips.
With its stunning lake views, charming streets, and peaceful atmosphere, Varenna is the perfect destination for a car-free escape. Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend or a relaxing getaway, Varenna will leave you with lasting memories. 🌞
EXCELLENT Based on 65 reviews Elaine Yeoh8 November 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We engaged Antonio Cresce to plan and manage our 2.5 week holiday in Italy - covering regions around Turin, Lake Maggiore and Verona. He was amazing from the planning stages, helping us to pick towns as bases, according to our needs and interests . We had video calls with him where he listened to what we wanted and we planned the details together. When we were in Italy, he kept in close contact and was readily available for any questions or issues we came across . The hotels he chose were incredible , and the excursions from the towns we stayed in were interesting and great experiences. His contacts, his experience and his professionalism made our holiday in Italy seamless and a truly wonderful experience! We would highly recommend Antonio from Expert to Italy ! Antonio helped us decide exactly where to go based on what we wanted and went above and beyond for us. His knowledge is incredible and everything was organised so well, he listened to us and answered every question we had along the way. Each place we stayed in was the best accommodation available in the area and we couldn't have asked for more, without his expertise the trip would not have been as perfect as it was. We will always go through him in future when heading to Italy. Jeremy Lewis14 September 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Antonio proved a fantastic agent. An absolutely stunning holiday. Organised totally by Antonio. His attention to detail was exceptional. All the train journey, ferry and taxi's all went like clockwork. Even when our train was delayed he changed the ferry tickets. He chose the Botania Hotel in Ischia, the service was the best we've had anywhere. The island is so beautiful. Antonio also gave us a list of where to vist on the Island. Would definitely use Antonio again for our next visit to Italy or Sicily.
