Positano holidays
Positano: sea views, beach days and evenings in town
Positano brings together houses rising above the sea, lively lanes, beach clubs, boutiques and inviting restaurants. Stay for morning swims, afternoons on a terrace and evenings in town. We help choose the hotel position and room that best suit the way you would like to spend your days.
The ExpertoItaly view
Enjoy Positano from morning to evening
The practical trade-offs are substantial. Prices are high, summer streets and ferries are busy, and two addresses described as central can involve very different climbs. We look at the route from the road to reception, lift coverage and the walk to the beach before recommending a hotel or villa.
Couples, honeymoons, first-time Amalfi Coast visitors, design-led stays and travellers who value atmosphere, dining and views more than level access or large beaches.
You need level walking, easy parking, a quiet village atmosphere, a broad sandy beach or a flexible base for repeated trips to Pompeii and Naples.
Planning decisions
Four choices that change the stay
Upper road or sea level?
Upper positions can offer exceptional views and easier road transfers. Lower addresses simplify the beach but may require long stairways. Central is not a complete description here.
Count the steps
Lifts rarely remove every gradient. We check the approach to the hotel, the route to restaurants and whether porters or luggage transfers are included.
Ferry or private transfer?
Ferries can make coastal journeys pleasant in season. Private transfers offer a useful alternative, especially on arrival days or when sea services are reduced.
Make time for Positano
Leave time to enjoy the setting you have chosen: a slow breakfast, a beach afternoon and dinner overlooking the sea are all part of a Positano stay.
How the days work
Use the town early, late and between the day visitors
The best Positano stay balances local time with one or two well-planned days along the coast.
Stay close to the hotel
Explore the lanes before they fill, spend time at Spiaggia Grande or Fornillo, then return for the quieter evening atmosphere after many day visitors have left.
See the coast from the water
A ferry or private boat avoids part of the road pressure and reveals the coastline properly. Weather, season and return times still need checking.
Start early and keep the plan selective
Combine Amalfi’s centre with Ravello’s gardens and viewpoints. A private driver provides more control; public transport is possible but can be crowded.
Plan your walking day
The walk commonly finishes above Positano, but the descent, heat and return to the hotel matter. We plan the route rather than treating it as a simple nearby attraction.

Ways to include Positano in your holiday
Positano as one coastal base
A focused stay with room to enjoy the town.
- One local beach and town day
- One boat or Amalfi and Ravello day
- One walking or slower hotel day
- Private arrival transfer where useful
Sorrento and Positano
Two bases divide archaeology from the coast.
- 3 nights in Sorrento
- 4 nights in Positano
- Use Sorrento for Pompeii
- Use Positano for the coast itself
Naples, Positano and Ischia
Three distinct phases without constant packing.
- Begin with 2–3 nights in Naples
- Stay 4–5 nights in Positano
- Finish with 4–6 nights in Ischia
- Connect by transfer and hydrofoil
Where to stay
Choose the address by access as well as the view
Villa Rosa offers a central address for enjoying Positano’s lanes, restaurants and sea views. Discuss your preferred dates and room early, particularly for a summer stay or a special occasion.
Villa Rosa
A long-established Positano address with sea-facing terraces and a position close to the centre. It suits travellers who want evening independence rather than resort facilities.

What to combine with Positano
The strongest second base should add easier exploration, city energy or restorative island time.
Praiano
Keep the sea views but exchange Positano’s intensity for a slower village rhythm.

A more flexible first base for Pompeii, ferries and car-free exploration.
