Put the Doge’s Palace and the Torre dell’Orologio at the top of your list but take time also to wander through the labyrinth of the city’s canals. Let temptation take over at the food market below the Rialto Bridge and head for the Mercerie, the area that runs between Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge, for some serious retail therapy.
The Bloom is a stylish B&B, with only six rooms, in a typical Venetian house. The high spot is the roof top terrace which looks out over the gothic façade of the Santo Stefano church and the bustling square below.
Florence: Wander through narrow streets where Renaissance churches and palaces sit side by side with the chicest of shops, gelati are consumed by the gallon and every road leads into another charming piazza.
Our accommodation in Florence is in the Palazzo di Camugliano, an 16th century townhouse converted into luxury boutique hotel with original frescoes and a charming internal garden.
Rome: Multi-layered and packed full of antiquity and early Christian treasures, the city’s quirky shops and great local trattorie provide the perfect antidote to an almost overwhelming excess of paintings and sculptures in galleries and churches.
The 4-star Monti Palace is a short walk from the Colosseum and ideally placed for exploring the Eternal City. The former 18th-century palazzo has undergone a complete transformation into a new design hotel with a fabulous rooftop terrace bar.
