The 2024 Netflix series Ripley gives the Amalfi Coast a striking black-and-white identity. Atrani’s stairs, passages and compact waterfront are central to it, but the places connected on screen are not always connected in real life.

This guide concerns the Netflix series starring Andrew Scott, rather than the 1999 film The Talented Mr Ripley. Use the series as a reason to look more closely at the places, with time for their history and daily life beyond a recognisable shot.

Atrani: the principal coastal setting

Atrani sits beside Amalfi in a steep-sided inlet. Our Amalfi and Atrani guide explains the towns’ shared history and what to explore beyond the filming locations. Its beach, church, square and dense network of steps give the village a strong spatial identity. Netflix’s account of the production explains the choice of locations and the visual approach to the series.

For a visit, begin with the waterfront and the small square, then explore the public passages at a pace that suits the climb. Notice how the road, church and houses occupy different levels. The repeated stairs are part of the real town, not just a device used to make Tom’s arrival difficult.

Atrani provides the main coastal setting for the 2024 Netflix series Ripley.

Atrani pairs naturally with time in Amalfi. You do not need to move hotels to visit it, and a short visit is more rewarding when it includes a pause in the square rather than a search for every camera position. Respect residents’ entrances and avoid treating private stairways or terraces as part of a film set.

Why a house in Atrani leads you to Capri

The production combined locations to create its fictional geography. Italy for Movies’ location record identifies Villa Torricella on Capri as the residence used for scenes presented as part of the Atrani setting, including its small circular temple overlooking Marina Grande.

Villa Torricella remains a private property. Enjoy the connection with the series, but plan your Capri visit around the island’s public gardens, viewpoints and towns.

If Capri interests you beyond the series, choose a proper island day: Capri town and its views, or Anacapri’s culture and gardens. Our Capri day-trip guide helps you decide what to include and how to manage the ferry.

Naples can stand for somewhere else

Naples also appears in the location record. Palazzo Sanfelice in the Sanità district represents a hotel in Palermo. This is a useful reminder that a place named in the story is not necessarily where the scene was filmed.

The interest of the Sanità extends beyond the series. Its palaces, streets and religious history belong to a substantial Naples visit. Treat residential buildings respectfully and check access to individual sites rather than assuming that a courtyard is permanently open to visitors.

Caravaggio provides another cultural connection with Ripley. In Naples, you can plan a visit around the paintings themselves using our guide to Caravaggio’s three Naples paintings. This is an art-history link, not a claim that each gallery was used as a filming location.

Explore the places behind the series

Atrani and Amalfi pair naturally in a coastal day. Give Capri a separate island visit and allow a few nights for Naples, so there is time to enjoy each place beyond its appearance on screen.

For a coastal stay, include Atrani within a day in Amalfi and choose a hotel for the rest of the holiday. For a wider Campania itinerary, a Naples stay followed by Sorrento or the coast gives the series’ locations a sensible context. Capri can be added when the season, sea conditions and your interests justify it.

The coast’s colour, summer crowds and modern transport will differ from the images on screen. Its architecture is still worth looking at carefully: narrow openings, covered lanes, stairs and the way buildings frame the sea become more noticeable once the film has drawn your attention to them.
