A proper bedroom or a sofa bed?
A sofa bed can work well for younger children, particularly for a shorter stay. It is not equivalent to a second bedroom and becomes less satisfactory as children grow or keep different sleeping hours.
FAMILY ACCOMMODATION IN SICILY
Deciding where to stay in Sicily with children is rarely just a matter of hotel category. Many parents want their children to experience Palermo’s markets, Siracusa’s Greek history, Mount Etna and the landscapes of the Val di Noto. What they need is not necessarily a children’s club or a large resort, but accommodation that makes ordinary family life manageable between days out.
The room arrangement is often the real difficulty. Children aged between one and twelve are generally too young to occupy a separate hotel room, while a standard family room can leave everyone sleeping in one space. A well-designed apartment, suite or lodge can keep the family together while providing a second bedroom, another bathroom, a kitchenette, a garden or a private pool.
This is a carefully selected group of four accommodation solutions rather than a general list of Sicily’s family hotels. Each supports a different kind of journey: a cultural stay in Palermo, a seafront base in Siracusa, Etna and the Ionian coast from a small country resort, or the Baroque south-east from a private-pool lodge.
For ideas about what to see and do, read Sicily for Families and Curious Travellers.
START WITH THE LAYOUT
The hotel category tells us very little about how comfortably a family will live for several days. We start with the ages of the children, the sleeping arrangement and the practical rhythm of the stay, then decide which property and location make sense.
A sofa bed can work well for younger children, particularly for a shorter stay. It is not equivalent to a second bedroom and becomes less satisfactory as children grow or keep different sleeping hours.
A second bathroom can matter more than extra floor space, particularly with four or five people preparing for a day out or returning from the beach.
It can make breakfasts, drinks and occasional early meals easier without turning the holiday into self-catering. In a city, nearby restaurants may still be part of the pleasure.
A private pool creates flexible rest time after excursions, but it also requires direct supervision. It is worth paying for when the family will genuinely use the accommodation between days out.
Palermo can work without a car and Siracusa can be largely car-free. Donna Carmela and Masseria della Volpe are country stays where a car is normally part of the plan.
PALERMO · TWO PROPER BEDROOMS
The Two-Bedroom Deluxe Apartment allows parents and children to stay together without placing everyone in one hotel room. It is a particularly useful solution for a few culturally rich days in Palermo before a quieter second part of the holiday.
Family layout
Approximately 100 m², with two proper bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen and living area.
Best rhythm
Three or four nights to explore Palermo without introducing a hire car into the city.
Best suited to
Parents with one or two school-age children who value separation, space and a central position.
EXPERTOITALY VIEW
Stanze al Genio is an eccentric small B&B in a historic Kalsa palazzo, connected to a remarkable majolica collection. There is no pool, spa or conventional family entertainment: Palermo itself is the experience, with markets, churches, food and evening streets within reach.
There is no lift, so stairs, luggage and pram handling should be considered carefully before confirming the apartment. We would normally arrange a private airport transfer and collect a hire car only after the Palermo stay, if the wider route needs one.
SIRACUSA · CULTURE AND SEA
La Giuggiulena offers one of the most convincing family arrangements for parents who want Siracusa’s history, some domestic independence and the sea to remain part of the stay.
Family layout
Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, private entrance, kitchenette and space for up to five.
Outdoor space
A large private terrace facing the sea, useful for breakfast, rest and unhurried time at the apartment.
Best rhythm
Five to seven nights for Siracusa, Ortigia, sea time and selected excursions without changing hotel repeatedly.
EXPERTOITALY VIEW
La Giuggiulena sits outside Ortigia rather than directly inside it. The walk is approximately twenty minutes, but the trade-off is meaningful: more space, direct contact with the sea and a private terrace to return to after sightseeing.
The internal stairs and open terrace should be considered in relation to the children’s ages and normal supervision. For the right family, the arrangement provides something difficult to find in central Siracusa: two bedrooms, two bathrooms and outdoor space without moving to an isolated villa.
ETNA · TWO PRIVATE-POOL SOLUTIONS
Donna Carmela balances excursions with genuine time at the accommodation. Although it carries “Resort” in its name, its family value lies in private, self-contained space within a characterful small estate rather than the programme of a large family complex.
FOR A FAMILY OF FOUR
Two bedrooms · One bathroom · Private garden and patio · Private pool
This is the more contained solution for parents with one or two children. Two proper bedrooms provide separation, while the garden and pool make an afternoon at the accommodation feel like a positive part of the holiday rather than time lost between excursions.
FOR UP TO SIX
Three en-suite bedrooms · Large terrace · Private pool · Views towards Etna and the Ionian coast
The Grand Suite is a qualitatively different family solution rather than simply a larger room. It works for a larger family, parents travelling with grandparents or two related family units who want three proper bedrooms and three bathrooms while sharing one private living arrangement.
EXPERTOITALY VIEW
Donna Carmela is well placed for Mount Etna, the Alcantara River Park, Taormina and the Ionian coast. A car is normally required, but this should not become a daily road trip: the gardens, restaurant and private accommodation justify keeping some afternoons deliberately free.
A private pool is valuable only when it suits the family’s rhythm, and it requires direct adult supervision. We would choose between the Family Lodge and Grand Suite according to the number of proper bedrooms and bathrooms required, not simply according to budget.

VAL DI NOTO · PRIVATE-POOL LODGE
The two Private Lodges offer a quieter country base for the Baroque south-east. Their strength is the combination of a private garden and pool with the restaurant, grounds and services of the Masseria close at hand.
Family layout
Approximately 78 m², with one bedroom, a separate living area with sofa bed, two bathrooms, garden and private pool.
Best suited to
Parents with one or two younger children for whom the sofa-bed arrangement remains practical.
Route role
A single country base for Noto, Vendicari, Modica, Ragusa and Scicli, with a car.
EXPERTOITALY VIEW
This is the accommodation where the layout needs the most candid discussion. It can work extremely well for younger children, but it does not offer the same privacy as Stanze al Genio, La Giuggiulena or Donna Carmela’s two- and three-bedroom arrangements.
Because there are two Private Lodges, two families travelling together can request one lodge each, keeping their own pool and private space while sharing the same wider property. This is always subject to both lodges being available.

CHOOSE THE ROUTE, NOT ALL FOUR HOTELS
Deciding where to stay in Sicily with children does not mean linking all four properties into one long self-drive. One well-positioned base can be enough for a week; with more time, two contrasting bases usually create a better balance than constant movement.
4–5 nights · CAR-FREE
Use Stanze al Genio as a city apartment, arrange a private airport transfer and explore Palermo on foot with one or two carefully chosen guided experiences.
5–7 nights · LARGELY CAR-FREE
Stay at La Giuggiulena and combine Ortigia, the archaeological park and slower time by the sea, adding transfers or a private excursion only where useful.
7 nights · ONE SELF-DRIVE BASE
Use Masseria della Volpe for Noto, Vendicari and selected Baroque towns while retaining the same lodge, garden and pool throughout the week.
8–10 nights · TWO BASES
Combine La Giuggiulena with Donna Carmela: start with culture and sea, then move once for Etna, Alcantara, gardens and private-pool time.
10–14 nights · CITY AND COUNTRYSIDE
Begin without a car at Stanze al Genio, then continue to either Donna Carmela for Etna and the Ionian coast or Masseria della Volpe for Noto and the Baroque south-east.
As children grow older, two conventional hotel rooms—ideally connecting or close together—broaden the accommodation choice considerably. These four solutions are most valuable while the family still needs to remain together within one apartment, suite or lodge.
Use these accommodation ideas alongside Sicily for Families and Curious Travellers. The forthcoming Family Holidays in Sicily page will bring the different single-base, two-centre, car-free and limited self-drive combinations together.

EXCELLENT Based on 76 reviews Posted on Google Daniel Hockman9 June 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. ExpertoItaly is a brilliant company, and Antonio organised a wonderful holiday for us in Puglia a region we did not know. His suggestions were all fantastic. He listens to what you want to do and works your holiday around that. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone contemplating a holiday in Italy. Thank you so much, Antonio!Posted on Google Elaine Yeoh6 June 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We engaged Antonio Cresce to plan and manage our 3 week holiday in Italy - covering towns in the regions of Puglia, Basilicata ,Calabria and Campania. Our holiday was seamless and exceeded all our expectations, and I would highly recommend Antonio / Expert to Italy for all your holiday planning and needs. From the point of choosing destinations, Antonio was collaborative and listened to everything on our wishlist . The towns he chose for us were exactly the places that we loved .. off the beaten track, charming and authentic Italy ! He picked our accomodation and again there was a lot of collaboration over our needs and we loved the choices . The tours he organised were exceptional. I wanted to see wildflowers and orchids and he engaged experts to take me around the national parks . I would never have been able to source the contacts and organise the excursions as perfectly as it was done . Some of the best moments of our travels , ever! Transfers were professional and seamless. Antonio remained fully contactable throughout our trip for questions , help and any details we needed. We felt fully secure and confident that we had an agent travelling along with us at every step! It was a huge benefit as well having him in the rough time zones as Italy where he is based in the UK, so that any questions were promptly answered and sorted . This could have been more problematic if we had engaged someone from home in Australia with the big difference in time zones . We appreciated his travel advice and recommendations, his work ethics , his professionalism and how he went over and beyond to make our holiday truly exceptional!Posted on Google Judith Warren29 April 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Antonio is super helpful and efficient and he knows Italy. He arranged our three centre Italian holiday, booked all train tickets, taxis and hotels and suggested places we wouldn't have thought of. You can have an independent holiday without problems, even in a less touristy area, because he's organised everyone for you and he's a back up if anything goes wrong. Thanks Antonio, be in touch next time!Posted on Google Anne Fenton22 September 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Antonio was a delight to deal with. We used ExpertoItaly to help us with our two-week holiday in Sicily. We had a couple of interactions with Antonio, and were very fast to close on our itinerary and hotels. Everyting was very well organized and suitable to our requirements. Antonio chose very good accommodations: small beautiful, full of character and well located. He also booked our bus trips as we did not want to rent a car. That worked really well. It was a great help and gave us great confidence for our trip. Antonio was really helpful in planning our trip to Italy. We wanted to visit 3 locations, he provided recommendations on accomodations which were great - really good locations for each booking. He also coordinated taxis and trains and provided a load of suggestions for each location for places to eat and sites to visit. He was readily available to answer any questions we had by email or WhatsApp. His assistance really helped us in planning this trip and saved us a lot of stress in trying to coordinate this ourselves. All in all we had a great holidayPosted on Google Simon Tanner8 July 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Antonio organised a wonderful two-centre trip for us. Would recommend ExpertoItaly to anyone. Antonio's expertise and great customer service combined to make our Sicily holiday a 100% hit. We had a rough idea of where and what we wanted to do, but Antonio fine tuned our ideas into a fabulous itinerary (Syracusa and Savoca based). He helped smooth any problems, gently reminded us to fill in the needed forms/provide info and made sure all was going well. Can't praise him enough, especially as he is a very small operation.Posted on Google Anna Connor24 June 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Would not hesitate to recommend Antonio - who planned our perfect honeymoon. I got in touch asking for advice on Italy 3-week itineraries, he sent a few options and I picked one and we worked together to adapt and perfect the locations we wanted to visit. Antonio then booked accommodation in each place, even being so specific to choose exact rooms he thought were the best in each hotel. He reserved cars, ferries and private transfers throughout the trip and took all the stress away and everything went seamlessly. His knowledge of every place and the activities to do / restaurants to visit was so helpful too. We ended up experiencing such a varied and beautiful Italy and visited places we would not have known about if not for Antonio. He is always available on whatsapp or for a phone call and was so helpful in changing our plans slightly when our flight got cancelled, and always available whilst we were away if we had any questions. If you are thinking of an Italian holiday do it! Who better to help plan than an Italian that is passionate about all his country has to offer?
