Marchesi Alfieri is not just a beautiful hotel, it is in fact a historic working winery and the home of a historic castle, making it the perfect base for vino-philes and history lovers alike.

Dating back to the 17th Century, the castle and winery was owned by the Alfieri family, who still own and operate the business today with the help of winemaker and Director Mario Oliviero.

Producing mainly red wines, with 50% of their produce being Barbera, vino-rosso loving guests are advised to take a tour of the winery during their stay, which also takes in the surrounding parkland which was created in the mid 1800s in an English style, and also boasts a beautiful oak tree that has stood fast for 300 years! Fun fact: the park was built on the original site of the nearby village, which was moved to make the creation possible!

Afterwards you will be invited to explore the palatial Orangery, under which is the wine cellar, where oak barrels (both the larger traditional Piedmont style, and the smaller style that the Count introduced to the winery after working in France) line the walls. There is also a stone plaque adorned with the Alfieri family symbol of an eagle, and the year 1705, which is the only piece of evidence that suggests when the winery was founded.

Marchesi Alfieri offers seven rooms which are all suited in the rustic buildings of the site’s old 18th Century village. This septet is known as La Locanda, and each elegant room is decorated with the Alfieri family’s very own antique furniture, giving the accommodation a welcoming, homely feel.

There is also the option to stay in La Margherita, a traditional Piedmontese farmhouse (with its very own orangery) located in the castle grounds. Comprised of four en-suite bedrooms, each featuring cosy fireplaces and luscious living areas, this is the perfect place to stay for flora fanatics, as it is located directly next to the colourful, fragrant garden, which one of the ground floor rooms even opens directly on to!

If you’re staying in La Margherita, the traditional Piedmontese farmhouse located in the castle grounds, you may enjoy a delicious breakfast served to you either outside (in the summer) or in the palatial conservatory. Or, if you’re staying in La Locanda, the family will select a scrumptious range of sweet and savoury delights to help you have the best possible start to your day.

There are two restaurants at about 200m from the Marchese Alfieri, in the hamlet of San Martino.

The Ristorante Concordia offers a daily menu radiating Piedmontity at every choice. You can opt for the tasting menu with four appetizers, two first courses, two second courses and two desserts (perhaps too much), or enjoy plin with roast sauce, baked rabbit or even a nice cockerel. Water it all with some Barbera wine, if you want to remain extremely territorial.

Il Re D'egli Ignoranti welcomes everyone with extreme kindness and makes you feel at home. The restaurant is refined and well furnished. It is possible to choose between a 35€ tasting menu that allows you to taste all the dishes, or opt for the a la carte menu. Do not miss the pies of artichokes on a bed of melted toma cheese and the lasagne with borage and barbabuc, an indigenous plant that in Piedmont is called "Radice".

San Martino Alfieri is a medieval town set in a hilly position, 257 meters above sea level.  The built-up area develops along a long ridge following the left bank of the Tanaro, about 14 km from Asti in south-west direction.

It is a wonderful and interesting base from which to enjoy an epicurean stay in the Alto Monferrato in the heart of Monferrato, part of the Unesco site of Italy for its wine growing landscapes. Beside being a gourmet mecca, the town is also famous for having given birth to Garibaldi's second wife Francesca Armosino.
