Aeolian Islands Holidays

Aeolian Islands holidays, planned around Sicily properly

The Aeolian Islands can be one of the most rewarding parts of a Sicily holiday, but they need careful planning. Ferry timings, arrival airports, island choice and the number of nights all affect whether the journey feels effortless or rushed.

We design Aeolian Islands holidays as part of a wider Sicily route, choosing the right island, the right hotel and the right pace for the way you want to travel.

Route ideas

Our favourite way to include the Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands work best when they are treated as the main focus of the holiday, not squeezed into a busy Sicily itinerary. Our preferred structure is to place the islands in the middle, with one or two shorter Sicily stays at either end to make the airport, port and transfer days feel calmer.

Our preferred Aeolian route

Palermo, Salina & Taormina

This is our strongest Sicily and Aeolian Islands combination: Palermo gives the holiday a cultural opening, Salina becomes the main island stay, and Taormina provides a polished eastern Sicily finale. The route works because the Aeolian Islands sit in the middle, so you are not rushing straight from airport to port or from hydrofoil to flight.

It also gives the journey a natural rhythm: city, island, coast. You have enough contrast without too many moves, and the most logistically delicate part of the holiday is protected by comfortable stays at both ends.

Island-led holiday planning

Aeolian Islands as the main focus

For clients who want the archipelago itself to be the reason for the journey, we can shape the holiday around Salina, Vulcano, Lipari or a carefully paced island-hopping sequence. This needs enough nights, good ferry planning and a clear decision about whether to settle into one island or move between several.

A smoother way to travel

Aeolian Islands with Sicily bookends

The Aeolian Islands often work best in the middle of the holiday. A short stay in Palermo, Cefalù, Taormina, Etna or Catania at either end can make the logistics calmer, reduce pressure on ferry days and give the journey a more natural rhythm.

Hotels we like in the Aeolian Islands

Choosing a hotel in the Aeolian Islands also means choosing a rhythm. Some properties work best as a settled island base, others suit travellers who want easier movement between islands, and some are strongest when the hotel itself becomes part of the reason to stay.

Vulcano

Therasia Resort Sea & Spa

A strong choice when you want sea views, resort comfort and a dramatic volcanic setting. Therasia works particularly well for clients who prefer a contained, comfortable base rather than changing island too often.

Planning the Aeolian Islands

How the Aeolian Islands work within a Sicily holiday

The Aeolian Islands are best treated as the main focus of the holiday, with Sicily used intelligently at either end. The right route depends on airport choice, ferry timings, island base, hotel style and how many nights you have.

Plan around the crossing

Ferries and hydrofoils shape the day, so we avoid tight airport-to-port or port-to-flight connections wherever possible.

Choose the island by pace

Salina suits slower stays, Vulcano works well for views and resort comfort, while Lipari is the most practical base for island-hopping.

Give the islands enough time

With too few nights, the Aeolian Islands can feel transfer-heavy. They work best when there is time to settle into the island rhythm.

Salina

Best for calm stays, views, food, wine and a slower island rhythm.

Vulcano

Best for sea views, volcanic scenery, Therasia and resort comfort.

Lipari

Best for practical access, restaurants and easier island-hopping.

Stromboli

Best for a specific volcanic experience, planned carefully.

Experiences & guides

Experiences, island notes and useful Aeolian guides

The Aeolian Islands are not a destination to rush through. Some days are best kept simple: a boat trip, a swim, a long lunch, an evening in a harbour town, or time to enjoy the view from the hotel. These guides and travel notes help you think more clearly about what to include — and what to leave out.

Ask us to shape your Aeolian Islands holiday properly

The Aeolian Islands can be a wonderful part of a Sicily holiday, but the details matter: which airport to use, where to stay, how many nights to allow, and how to connect the islands with Palermo, Taormina, Etna or the rest of Sicily.

Tell us what you have in mind and we will help you decide whether the Aeolian Islands are the right focus — and, if they are, how to make the route feel calm, balanced and worth the journey.

What we will help you decide

  • Which island suits your style of travel
  • How many nights to allow
  • Whether to use Palermo, Taormina or another Sicily stay as a bookend
  • How to avoid rushed ferry and transfer days
  • Which hotels fit the route, not just the wish list
