Best Time to Go & Getting Around
Late May, June and September are ideal: the sea is warm enough for swimming, the countryside is still green and the beaches are calmer than in high summer. July and August are busier but excellent if long beach days are the priority.
A car is usually the most comfortable way to explore this coastline, particularly in the Maremma and Argentario where public transport is limited. We can add car hire to a wider rail-based itinerary, so you only drive when it truly makes sense.

What do you actually mean by the “Tuscan Coast”?
From Livorno and the Etruscan Riviera down past Cecina and Bibbona to the Maremma and Monte Argentario – rocky coves, long beaches, harbours and nature reserves.
Is the Tuscan Coast only about the beach?
No. You can mix beaches with Medicean forts and canals in Livorno, Etruscan and Roman sites near Baratti and Populonia, and hilltowns like Massa Marittima and Castiglione della Pescaia.
How good is the food and wine?
Excellent: top seafood in Livorno, beachside trattorie all along the coast, and easy access to Bolgheri reds, Maremma whites and inland wine estates.
Which part of the coast suits which kind of beach holiday?
Castiglioncello and Argentario for rocky coves and drama; Follonica, Castiglione della Pescaia, Marina di Grosseto and Principina for long sandy Blue Flag beaches; Punta Ala for something more exclusive.
Can I combine the Tuscan Coast with Saturnia’s thermal baths?
Yes. Saturnia pairs best with the southern coast and Maremma/Argentario and can be a day trip or a short add-on to a wider southern Tuscany itinerary.
