The ExpertoItaly view

Stay in Ragusa Ibla rather than simply visiting it

A.D. 1768 is worth choosing because it places you directly on Piazza Duomo, with the streets, churches, restaurants and evening atmosphere of Ragusa Ibla immediately outside.

The hotel occupies a restored historic palazzo, but its character is not conventionally grand or formal. Original stonework, frescoes and period details sit alongside contemporary furniture, graphic flooring and modern Sicilian art. The result feels individual and carefully considered rather than like a traditional heritage hotel.

Its small scale also matters. Bedrooms differ considerably in size, outlook and atmosphere, so the right choice depends on what will add most to the stay. For many clients, an Executive room overlooking Piazza Duomo will be more rewarding than a larger room without a balcony. Don Nino is the meaningful premium choice when a private terrace and separate living space are priorities.

This is primarily a hotel for exploring Ragusa and the wider south-east of Sicily. Clients are likely to spend mornings over breakfast, walk directly into the town during the day and return before going out for dinner nearby. Those wanting a pool, spa, extensive gardens or an all-day resort experience may prefer a countryside hotel elsewhere in the Val di Noto.

Atmosphere

Historic and design-led, with an intimate residential feel rather than the formality of a larger hotel.

Location

Directly on Piazza Duomo, making Ragusa Ibla’s principal sights, restaurants and evening walks part of the stay.

Rooms

Highly individual, with meaningful differences in outlook, balconies, internal space, private terraces and independence.

Role in the route

A three- or four-night cultural base that works particularly well before or after countryside, Etna or a sea-facing stay in Siracusa.

Choosing the right hotel

Is A.D. 1768 the right hotel for you?

This is a small town hotel for travellers who want Ragusa Ibla’s architecture, restaurants and evening atmosphere to be part of the stay. It is less suited to clients looking for a pool, spa or resort-style day within the hotel.

Best for

Couples who want to stay within historic Ragusa

A.D. 1768 particularly suits culturally curious couples who value architecture, individual interiors, good food and the freedom to walk out for sightseeing or dinner.

  • Couples and anniversary travellers
  • Architecture and design enthusiasts
  • Food-and-wine travellers
  • Clients planning a wider eastern Sicily route
Main strengths

Piazza Duomo is immediately outside

The central setting is the principal reason to stay here. Ragusa Ibla’s churches, lanes, restaurants and evening life become part of the holiday rather than a separate excursion.

  • Direct position on Piazza Duomo
  • Historic architecture with contemporary design
  • Small scale and individually styled rooms
  • Duomo-view rooms and a genuinely worthwhile terrace suite
Good to know

This is an urban stay, not a country resort

There is no pool, spa or extensive garden, and clients will normally go out for dinner. Ragusa Ibla’s cobbles, slopes and steps also mean that the wider town is not uniformly level.

  • Parking and historic-centre access need planning
  • Room size, outlook and outdoor space vary considerably
  • A car is useful for touring, but unnecessary for evenings
  • Exact access should be checked for clients with limited mobility
Recommended stay

Three nights minimum; four nights is the better pace

Three nights allow time for Ragusa and one nearby excursion. Four nights give the stay a more comfortable rhythm, with time for a guided regional day and an unhurried afternoon or evening in Ibla.

  • 3 nights: Ragusa with one focused day out
  • 4 nights: the best balance for most clients
  • 5 nights: worthwhile with two substantial excursions
  • Works best between countryside, Etna or a sea-facing stay
Choosing your room

Rooms and suites worth considering

Room selection matters at A.D. 1768. The accommodation differs not only in size, but also in outlook, balcony or terrace, position within the building and degree of independence. A larger room is therefore not automatically the most rewarding choice.

Deluxe room at A.D. 1768 Boutique Hotel in Ragusa Ibla
The sensible starting category

Selected Deluxe Rooms

Approximately 26–29 m² | King or queen bed | Individual outlooks

The Deluxe category can be a perfectly good starting point, but the individual room must be confirmed. Donna Nunziata and Donna Vittoria combine a king-size bed with a balcony overlooking Via Cabrera, while Donna Pippa adds a separate private study.

Other Deluxe rooms differ in size, bed type and outlook, so the category name alone does not tell us enough. Don Marco, at around 14 m² with a French bed, is better treated as a compact single room rather than a couple’s starting choice.

Our starting point

Choose a specifically confirmed Deluxe room when keeping the supplement controlled matters more than a direct Duomo outlook. We would prioritise a king bed and balcony rather than accepting an unspecified room within the category.

Executive Duomo View room overlooking Piazza Duomo at A.D. 1768 Boutique Hotel
Best all-round choice

Executive Duomo View

Approximately 30–32 m² | King bed | Balcony overlooking Piazza Duomo

This is the category that most clearly connects the bedroom with the reason for staying at A.D. 1768. The supplement buys a balcony directly over Piazza Duomo, together with a larger room and a stronger sense of being within Ragusa Ibla.

Donna Teresa is the more characterful option where available, adding an original frescoed ceiling. Don Nicola offers the same defining Duomo position with a more contemporary interior.

Why we would choose it

This is our preferred all-round category for most couples. The balcony and direct view of the square usually add more to the stay than moving into a larger suite without private outdoor space.

Junior Suite Don Rocco at A.D. 1768 Boutique Hotel in Ragusa Ibla
When internal space matters most

Junior Suite Don Rocco

33 m² | King bed | Large bathroom and walk-in wardrobe

Don Rocco is the practical suite choice. It provides a generous bathroom, substantial wardrobe space and views across Piazza Duomo and the Hyblean landscape.

Its advantage is mainly inside the room. It does not add a private balcony or terrace, so couples attracted by the atmosphere of the square may still prefer an Executive Duomo View room.

Where the supplement goes

Choose Don Rocco for greater bathroom and wardrobe space, particularly on a longer stay. Do not assume that it is automatically better than an Executive room when the balcony and direct connection with Piazza Duomo matter more.

Panga independent loft at A.D. 1768 Boutique Hotel in Ragusa Ibla
A different style of stay

Panga Independent Loft

30 m² | Queen bed | Independent entrance from Piazza Duomo

Panga occupies one of the palazzo’s former commercial spaces and has its own entrance directly from Piazza Duomo. Its high stone ceilings and separate access make it feel less like a conventional hotel bedroom and more like a small independent town residence.

The difference is independence rather than a better view, balcony or greater hotel service. Clients remain in the heart of Ibla but experience a little more separation from the main accommodation.

The most independent stay

Panga suits couples who value character, direct street access and the feeling of returning to their own space. It is less suitable when a Duomo balcony or the atmosphere of the main palazzo is the priority.

The clearest premium upgrade

Terrace Suite Don Nino

42 m² | King bed | Private lounge | Exclusive 20 m² terrace

Don Nino offers a genuinely different experience from the other rooms. The suite combines a bedroom with a separate private lounge and a substantial terrace overlooking Piazza Duomo and the Hyblean valleys.

The supplement is not simply paying for a larger floor plan. It buys private outdoor space, broader views and somewhere to spend time beyond the bedroom. That becomes particularly valuable on a four- or five-night stay, when the terrace can form part of the daily rhythm rather than being enjoyed only briefly.

Best for privacy and views

Don Nino is the romantic choice and the most meaningful upgrade for an anniversary or longer stay. The supplement is justified when the private terrace and separate living area will be used; it is unnecessary for clients who expect to spend almost every day exploring until late.

Life at the hotel

A small hotel shaped by breakfast, design and the life of Ragusa Ibla

A.D. 1768 is not designed around a pool, spa or programme of resort facilities. Its appeal comes from a slower start to the day, the character of the restored palazzo and the freedom to step directly into Ragusa Ibla whenever you are ready to explore.

Breakfast in La Carretteria

Allow time for the morning rather than treating breakfast as a formality

Breakfast is served in La Carretteria, within the former stables and carriage spaces of the palazzo. Stone vaults and historic details give the room considerably more character than a conventional hotel breakfast hall.

The selection is centred on Sicilian flavours, pastries, fruit and local products. For culturally curious and food-focused travellers, this is part of the experience rather than simply the meal included with the room.

How we would plan it

Avoid arranging an early departure every morning. On at least one day, allow a slower breakfast before exploring Ragusa Ibla on foot. Early private excursions can be scheduled on another day when the regional route makes the timing worthwhile.

Historic rooms with a contemporary eye

The palazzo feels individual rather than conventionally grand

Original stonework, frescoes and period features are combined with modern furniture, graphic flooring and contemporary art. The result is more design-led and personal than the heavy formality sometimes associated with historic Sicilian hotels.

The shared interiors are pleasant places for a pause between sightseeing and dinner, but this remains a small urban hotel rather than a property where clients are expected to spend the whole day within extensive public spaces.

Who will value it

The setting particularly suits clients interested in architecture, interiors and small hotels with a distinct sense of place. Those seeking gardens, a pool or a full leisure programme should choose a countryside property instead.

Reception at A.D. 1768 Boutique Hotel beside Piazza Duomo in Ragusa Ibla
Ragusa Ibla beyond the entrance

The town provides much of the hotel experience

The advantage of this address becomes clearest in the late afternoon and evening. Clients can return after sightseeing, change for dinner and walk directly into Piazza Duomo and the surrounding lanes without arranging a car, transfer or hotel shuttle.

Restaurants, aperitifs, churches, viewpoints and evening walks form part of the rhythm of the stay. The hotel works best when enough time is left for Ragusa itself rather than filling every day with long excursions elsewhere.

A useful practical note

Ragusa Ibla is highly walkable around the central streets, but the wider town includes cobbles, steps and slopes. We would balance guided walking and regional excursions with unstructured time close to the hotel.

Location and practical notes

Directly on Piazza Duomo in the heart of Ragusa Ibla

The location is the principal reason to choose A.D. 1768. The cathedral, historic streets, restaurants and evening atmosphere of Ragusa Ibla are immediately outside, while journeys into the wider Val di Noto require more deliberate planning.

Why the position matters

A town stay that does not depend on the car every evening

A.D. 1768 opens directly onto Piazza Duomo, placing clients within the historic life of Ragusa Ibla rather than on its outskirts. The Duomo di San Giorgio, Baroque lanes, restaurants and principal evening walking areas can all be reached from the hotel without arranging transport.

A car remains useful for travelling through south-east Sicily, but it is not needed for every part of the stay. This allows clients to tour during the day and then leave the car behind for dinner and an evening walk through Ibla.

The wider city is not completely level. Ragusa Ibla includes cobbled lanes, steps and slopes, particularly when walking beyond the central square or towards Ragusa Superiore. The precise room route and access should be considered for clients with limited mobility.

For a fuller understanding of the town and how to divide time between its two historic centres, read our guide to Ragusa Ibla, its Baroque streets and the wider city .

Arrival and departure

Comiso is closest; Catania requires a longer transfer

Comiso Airport is the nearest arrival point, while Catania Airport is approximately 100 kilometres away. Catania remains a practical choice because of its wider flight network, but the journey should be treated as a substantial private transfer rather than a short airport hop.

Walking in Ragusa Ibla

The central sights and restaurants are genuinely walkable

Piazza Duomo and the surrounding streets are directly outside the hotel, making dinner, aperitifs and evening walks straightforward. Longer walks through Ibla or towards Ragusa Superiore involve cobbles, stairways and steeper sections, particularly in warm weather.

Driving and parking

Useful for touring, but arrival needs careful organisation

A car gives clients greater freedom for Modica, Scicli, Donnafugata, the coast and the wider Val di Noto. Ragusa Ibla’s narrow streets, controlled-access areas and limited central parking mean that unloading and parking arrangements should be confirmed before arrival.

Exploring independently

Nearby towns work best as planned days rather than quick detours

Modica is the easiest nearby cultural excursion. Scicli, Donnafugata, the coast and the more distant Baroque towns require a fuller day, whether travelling independently or with a private driver and guide. Siracusa is usually more rewarding as the next stay rather than a rushed return excursion.

Routes and suggested holidays

How A.D. 1768 can fit into a wider Sicily journey

A.D. 1768 works best as a three- or four-night cultural stay rather than a brief overnight stop. It can replace a countryside base within a longer eastern Sicily route, combine naturally with a sea-facing stay in Siracusa, or form the centre of a simpler short holiday supported by private transfers and carefully chosen excursions.

Published holiday

Etna, Ragusa and Siracusa

3 nights near Etna | 4 nights in Ragusa | 4 nights in Siracusa

This eastern Sicily route begins among the landscapes, gardens and wine country around Mount Etna, continues through the Baroque south-east and finishes beside the sea in Siracusa.

The published holiday currently uses Masseria della Volpe for its middle stage. A.D. 1768 can be used instead when clients would rather stay directly within Ragusa Ibla, walk to restaurants each evening and make the historic town itself a central part of the journey.

A.D. 1768’s role

It changes the middle stage from a pool-and-countryside stay into a more cultural and urban chapter, while retaining good access to Modica, Scicli, Donnafugata and the wider Val di Noto by car.

Sea-facing terraces at La Giuggiulena in Siracusa
Tailor-made idea

Ragusa and Siracusa

3–4 nights in Ragusa | 4 nights in Siracusa

This pairing works because the two stays are similarly personal but offer genuinely different surroundings. Ragusa brings Baroque streets, Piazza Duomo and inland south-eastern Sicily; Siracusa adds sea views, Ortigia and a softer coastal finish.

In Siracusa, La Giuggiulena provides a small sea-facing stay with terraces, breakfast by the water and access to Ortigia without moving into a large resort.

Why the combination works

A.D. 1768 supplies town atmosphere and walkable evenings around Piazza Duomo. La Giuggiulena introduces the sea, outdoor space and a different daily rhythm, so changing hotel creates real contrast rather than repeating the same experience.

Four nights in Ragusa without unnecessary hotel changes

4 nights at A.D. 1768 | Private transfers or self-drive

A single well-planned base can be more satisfying than dividing a short holiday between several nearby towns. Four nights give time to experience Ragusa Ibla properly while adding one or two focused days into the surrounding area.

The stay could include a private architectural walk through Ragusa, followed by a chauffeured or self-drive day combining Modica and Scicli, Donnafugata and wine country, or local food traditions with the landscapes of the Ragusa countryside.

Best for

Couples who want culture, food and time to settle into one place, with the simplicity of a direct airport transfer and selected guided experiences rather than a tightly packed touring route.

Plan a holiday featuring this hotel

A.D. 1768 can form part of a complete tailor-made, land-only holiday
designed around your preferred dates, length of stay, departure airport,
room priorities and the destinations you would like to include before
or after Ragusa. We can also consider the right balance between private
transfers, car hire, guided experiences and time to explore independently.

A properly paced route

A.D. 1768 works best with at least three nights, while four nights
usually provide the better balance between Ragusa Ibla, one or two
carefully chosen excursions and unstructured time in the town. We
will consider whether Ragusa should be a short cultural chapter, the
centre of a simpler holiday or part of a wider eastern Sicily route,
avoiding unnecessary hotel changes where nearby places can be visited
comfortably from one base.

Land arrangements organised together

ExpertoItaly can arrange the accommodation, room-category requests,
airport car hire or private transfers, onward journeys and arrival
timing as one joined-up itinerary. We can also enrich the wider stay
with a private Ragusa walking tour, guided visits to Modica and Scicli,
food-and-wine experiences, Donnafugata and countryside excursions, or
a nature-led day towards the south-eastern coast.

Personal advice and support

We can compare live room availability, current supplements, exact

than treating every category as interchangeable. We will also consider
parking or transfer arrangements, the pace of regional excursions and
practical support throughout the journey.
