How to Use Trenitalia Digital Regional Tickets

Trenitalia’s Digital Regional Ticket (Biglietto Digitale Regionale – BDR) is the easiest way to travel on Italy’s regional trains.
It is paperless, flexible, and now even simpler thanks to automatic validation – so there is no longer any need to manually check in before departure.

This guide is designed for ExpertoItaly travellers using regional trains to move between towns, lakes, and cities.
It explains how Digital Regional Tickets work, how to retrieve them, and what you do (and no longer need to do) on the day.

1) What Is a Trenitalia Digital Regional Ticket (BDR)?

A Digital Regional Ticket is an electronic ticket stored on your phone (via the Trenitalia app) or in your Trenitalia account on the website.
You do not need to print anything – you simply show the ticket on your device when asked by the conductor.

Each Digital Regional Ticket includes:

  • Your selected travel date
  • Your chosen regional train
  • A dynamic QR code used for inspection on board
  • Your passenger details

Tickets are purchased directly from Trenitalia or authorised retailers, then accessed on the app or through your email receipt.
