Welcome to Catania, where the air hums with history, the streets whisper baroque secrets, and Mount Etna—Europe’s most active volcano—keeps an ever-watchful eye on the city.
This isn’t just another charming Sicilian town; Catania is bold, theatrical, and deliciously chaotic.
It’s a place where past and present dance together, from ancient ruins to buzzing nightlife, from the dramatic cliffs of Aci Trezza to the mouthwatering embrace of pasta alla Norma. Ready for the ultimate Sicilian adventure? Buckle up!
Catania is no stranger to drama. Founded by the Siculi people and later embraced by the Greeks, its name literally means “leaning against Etna”—a fitting tribute to the mighty volcano that has both destroyed and shaped the city over the centuries.
The most dramatic event? The 1669 eruption, when lava swallowed entire neighborhoods and even pushed the coastline further into the sea.
But Catania, like a true Sicilian nonna, refused to give in. Rising from the ashes, the city was rebuilt in spectacular Sicilian Baroque, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Start at the Duomo, a grand cathedral dedicated to Saint Agatha, Catania’s beloved patron saint. Inside, you’ll find the tomb of Vincenzo Bellini, the city’s famous composer.
Step outside, and you’ll be greeted by the Fontana dell’Elefante, a peculiar lava stone elephant balancing an obelisk on its back.
Known as U’ Liotru, legend has it that this little pachyderm is a former sorcerer—because, why not?
This street is basically a baroque art gallery, lined with five stunning churches, including San Benedetto and San Francesco Borgia, where Bellini once played the organ. Fun fact: this area is often used in films because of its unapologetic baroque drama.
Built in the 13th century, Castello Ursino once stood by the sea—until Etna’s lava decided otherwise in 1669. Today, it houses a museum and is one of the best spots for panoramic views of Catania.
Imagine watching a play in a 2nd-century theatre, where Romans once sat under the Sicilian sun. Right next door, the Odeon was a rehearsal space for musicians and actors—basically, Catania’s original backstage pass.
Named after the city’s most famous composer, Teatro Massimo Bellini is a baroque masterpiece. Even if you’re not into opera, step inside for a glimpse of its breathtaking frescoed ceiling and grand chandeliers.
Now part of the university, this massive monastery is a maze of cloisters, grand halls, and hidden gardens. The historic library alone, with its tiered wooden bookshelves, is worth the visit.
If you really want to feel the pulse of Catania, head to La Pescheria, the city’s legendary open-air fish market, located just behind Piazza del Duomo.
This isn’t just a market—it’s an opera of the senses, where fishermen bellow prices like tenors, octopuses writhe in plastic tubs, and the scent of the Ionian Sea fills the air.
Here, locals haggle over the freshest swordfish, clams, prawns, and sea urchins, while butchers slice tuna with the precision of artists. It’s loud, chaotic, and utterly Sicilian.
Beneath the lively streets of Catania flows the Amenano River, a hidden waterway that once ran above ground before being buried by lava during the 1669 eruption of Mount Etna.
Today, its presence can still be glimpsed at the Fontana dell’Amenano, an elegant 19th-century fountain in Piazza del Duomo, where the river briefly surfaces before vanishing underground again.
Locals poetically describe the cascading water as acqua a linzolu—a “sheet of water.”
Another intriguing glimpse of the river can be found at La Pescheria, Catania’s bustling fish market, where its cool waters flow through the stone basins.
Though largely hidden, the Amenano remains a symbolic and vital part of Catania’s history, a reminder of the city’s deep connection with its volcanic landscape.
Tucked away in the heart of Catania, Fratelli Napoli is a theatre where tradition and craftsmanship bring the art of Sicilian Opera dei Pupi to life.
For generations, the Napoli family has been dedicated to preserving this UNESCO-recognised heritage, handcrafting intricately detailed puppets and staging mesmerising performances of chivalric legends.
Inspired by the epic tales of Charlemagne and his paladins, their shows transport audiences into a world of honour, duels, and adventure, all performed with remarkable skill and precision.
More than just a theatre, Fratelli Napoli is a living museum of Sicilian storytelling, where the echoes of history, myth, and craftsmanship come together in a timeless spectacle.
Ever heard of Polyphemus, the one-eyed giant from The Odyssey? Legend says he hurled three enormous boulders into the sea here, creating the iconic Faraglioni (sea stacks) of Aci Trezza. Nearby, Aci Castello’s medieval fortress, perched on a lava promontory, offers dreamy sunset views.
For a true Sicilian experience, head to Nicolosi, Zafferana Etnea, and Milo, charming towns where volcanic soil gives birth to world-class wines. Visit in September for Vinimilo, a festival celebrating Etna’s finest vintages.
Also, don’t miss Sant’Alfio, home to the Castagno dei Cento Cavalli, a chestnut tree so old that it probably witnessed the fall of the Roman Empire.
For history lovers, Bronte offers more than just its famous pistachios—it’s also home to the Duchy of Bronte, once granted to Admiral Horatio Nelson by King Ferdinand III in gratitude for his support in securing the Sicilian throne.
Visit Nelson’s Castle, a former Benedictine abbey turned noble residence, to explore the legacy of Britain’s greatest naval hero in the heart of Sicily.
Discover Sicily and the Aeolian Islands with native guide Giusi Murabito. Walking Eolie & Sicily tours reveal hidden gems, local traditions, and authentic culinary experiences.

Antonio helped us decide exactly where to go based on what we wanted and went above and beyond for us. His knowledge is incredible and everything was organised so well, he listened to us and answered every question we had along the way. Each place we stayed in was the best accommodation available in the area and we couldn't have asked for more, without his expertise the trip would not have been as perfect as it was. We will always go through him in future when heading to Italy. Jeremy Lewis14 September 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Antonio proved a fantastic agent. An absolutely stunning holiday. Organised totally by Antonio. His attention to detail was exceptional. All the train journey, ferry and taxi's all went like clockwork. Even when our train was delayed he changed the ferry tickets. He chose the Botania Hotel in Ischia, the service was the best we've had anywhere. The island is so beautiful. Antonio also gave us a list of where to vist on the Island. Would definitely use Antonio again for our next visit to Italy or Sicily.
