Four Ways to Stay in Northern Le Marche with ExpertoItaly

Northern Le Marche stretches between the Adriatic and the first folds of the Apennines. Within a relatively compact area you can stay in:

• a seaside city,

• a Renaissance hill town,

• a countryside estate,

• or a castle above the plains.

Rather than treating every name on the map as a separate “must”, ExpertoItaly uses the area through four main types of stay. Once you know which format sounds most like you, it becomes much easier to decide where to base yourself, how long to stay, and whether you need a car.

The four ways are:

1. City and Sea – Longer Stays in Pesaro

Palla di Pomodoro sculpture by the seafront in Pesaro, Italy

The Palla di Pomodoro reflecting Pesaro’s seafront – a modern icon between city hotels and the Adriatic.

Best for: guests who want a very Italian seaside city, ideal for a week or more, combining town life with an organised beach.

Pesaro gives you:

• a compact historic centre with cafés, shops and everyday life;

• a lungomare with a long, serviced strip of sand, lawns and a promenade;

• a mainly Italian crowd in summer rather than a purely international resort scene.

It works well if you like the idea of “living in a small city by the sea” for a while, with options for simple day trips.

Typical stay

Duration: 6–10 nights

Pattern: mornings in the centro storico, afternoons on the seafront, plus one or two planned excursions inland or along the coast.

Car-free or with a car?

Pesaro is excellent for car-free holidays. It sits on the main Adriatic railway line, with fast trains from Bologna, Ancona and beyond. You can:

• arrive and leave by train;

• move between centre and seafront entirely on foot;

• add a driver or a couple of guided excursions for inland visits if you wish.

2. Renaissance Hill Town – a Short Stay in Urbino

Urbino’s Palazzo Ducale and cathedral catching the last light – a compact Renaissance stage set on its own hilltop.

Best for: well-travelled, culture-minded guests who want to add a serious Renaissance hilltown to their itinerary without devoting a full week to it.

Urbino gives you:

• a concentrated dose of Renaissance architecture and art;

• a lungomare with a long, serviced strip of sand, lawns and a promenade;

• a setting that is important in Italian history but small enough to explore on foot.

Typical stay

Duration: usually 2 nights

Pattern: arrival and first impressions on day one; a full day for the palace, gallery, Raphael’s house and walks along the walls on day two; departure on day three.

Many guests use Urbino as a short “cultural spike” between more relaxed sections of their holiday.

Car-free or with a car?

Without a car, Urbino is reached by bus or private transfer from the coast. Once there, you do everything on foot and stay within the historic centre.

With a car, Urbino fits naturally into a self-drive loop through northern Le Marche and perhaps Umbria. You park below and walk up into the town, knowing you can move on easily when you are ready.

3. Countryside Estate – between Pesaro and Urbino

A shaded country lane in northern Le Marche – quiet backroads linking hill towns, farms and woodland.

Best for: guests who enjoy a self-drive holiday and want space, greenery and a pool, with short drives to both city and hilltown.

Between Pesaro and Urbino, the landscape turns into low hills, farmland and woodland. Here you can stay on an estate where you look out over vineyards and fields rather than streets or lidos.

A countryside base suits travellers who like:

• quiet evenings, open views and birdsong;

• the option to stay put for a day by the pool or on local walks;

• short drives to towns and villages when they feel like exploring.

Typical stay

Duration: 4–7 nights

Pattern: a mix of completely relaxed days on site and outings to places such as Pesaro, Urbino, Gradara and the hilltowns between Pesaro and Ancona.

Car-free or with a car?

Realistically, this format is for drivers or guests with a private driver. Distances are not long, but you will want the freedom to reach restaurants, viewpoints and coastal or inland towns in your own time.

4. Castle Stay – above the Plains, near the Sea

A castle stay here crowns a day driving through Le Marche’s medieval hill villages.

Best for: couples and families who like the romance of a castle hotel, with easy access to the coast and nearby towns.

Further north towards Senigallia, you reach hilltop castles that now function as small, characterful hotels. From here you look out over fields and the distant sea, while still being a short drive from beaches and towns.

A castle stay gives you:

• thick walls, towers and courtyards instead of standard corridors;

• a stronger sense of occasion than a normal hotel;

• a feeling of being “away from it all” without actually being remote.

Typical stay

Duration: 3–5 nights

Pattern: slow mornings, perhaps a swim or walk; a couple of structured outing days; at least one evening simply enjoying the property.

Car-free or with a car?

In practice, a castle stay makes most sense with a hire car. You will want to explore coastal towns such as Senigallia, inland villages and viewpoints at your own pace.

How We Help you Choose

In the end, the choice comes down to:

how long you have;

whether you want sea, hills, countryside or a mix;

and whether you prefer to travel car-free or by car.

From there, ExpertoItaly can suggest one or two of these four formats – and the specific properties that fit best – so that northern Le Marche slots naturally into your wider holiday, instead of feeling like a puzzle of names and dots on a map.
